Company of Heroes Online, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Führer

So Company of Heroes is being turned into an online, free-to-play title. It's currently in closed beta, but keys are available to Fileplanet members!
http://www.fileplanet.com/promotions/company-of-heroes-online/landing-b.aspx
There should still be keys available, but if there aren't I'm pretty sure more will be available in the near future.

CoH was rad, but I already played the fuck out of it. Why should I play it again?
I never played CoH, why should I play it now?

This is at it's heart the same Company of Heroes you know and love, but with some tweaks. Also for free. Did I mention it's free? Cause it is. So if you've never played CoH before, this is a great opportunity to do so. Because not only is it a great multiplayer game, but you can actually play through the campaign as well. And this isn't some asian knockoff of CoH. This is being developed by Relic and published by THQ. Basically they just decided it would be cool to make CoH even more awesome. Because in CoHO you actually have persistent commanders (you can have up to 4) that carry over from match to match and level up, allowing you to enable more powerful abilities as well as equip items (which have level requirements as well).

Currently, the only nations available in the beta are the U.S. (booooring) and the snappy dressing, goose-stepping Germans (hurray!). When you choose a nation, you then choose a doctrine but the doctrine choice is permanent for that commander. Your doctrine determines what special abilities you can choose from. It's similar to how it works with command points in the original, but since your commander is persistent and levels up, you actually choose your abilities before the match. Different abilities have different command point requirements before you can use them, but using them doesn't cost any command points so they never decrease during a match. With each level, you also get an improvement point that can be spent on a special ability to make it even better. Also, don't worry too much about choosing the wrong abilities or the wrong specializations for those abilities as you can spend supply to reset your improvement points (basically a respec). You can't change your doctrine though.

Here's an example of a commander tree:
Commander_Tree2_1280.jpg
Now, you can't see what the abilities actually are, or the improvements, but you get the gist of it. There's a lot of customization available so two commanders with the same doctrine may specialize their abilities quite differently.

DO NOT SKIP THE TUTORIAL
First of all, while this is very similar to CoH there are some important differences and the tutorial will teach you about these changes (along with boring stuff that you already know). Also, you get a free level for each of the six tutorials you play, so not playing the tutorials is kissing 6 free levels goodbye. And the beauty of it is that once you complete the tutorials on one commander, future commanders can auto-complete the tutorials so you can just get your free levels. So don't skip the tutorial or you're a dummkopf.

So don't be stupid, be a smarty! Come and join the Nazi party!

Or, you know, you can play American too. It ain't no thang if you do.

Can you go over the important differences since I won't be playing the beta?

As someone very familiar with CoH, I'm really curious.

I will warn you that the downloader is crazy slow. I averaged around 100 KB/s whereas with Steam I usually get about 450 KB/s. What's worse is that it seemed to lag my connection because pages load really slow while it's active, much slower than when I'm pulling down 450 KB/s from Steam. Probably has something to do with peer-to-peer, but I didn't see an option to disable peer-to-peer like you can with the Blizzard updater.

I really enjoyed Company of Heroes

but god help me I'm so terrible at strategy games that I could only finish about half of the campaign

MY BRAIN DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY

BTW, don't you use their downloader. It sucks

Try downloading the torrent file the /torrents folder with your favorite torrent program.

Then change the name of the folder it downloads to game, and the game folder that already exists in the install directory to game_old.

Then copy it over and it works

    It went overnight for me.

No. If you're not going to play the beta, I don't see the point in discussing the beta with you. You can wait till it goes live.

Sweet. I bought the game and played some of the singleplayer but never played with other people.

Signed up for this. There are still keys at Fileplanet.

    It's just shitty.

Try downloading with the torrent file in the /torrents dir

    then simply copy pasta!

most don't, mine throttles P2P or anything even somewhat similar (like steam) like crazy.

DO AS I SAY and you will dl super ultra fast.

    Look in:
    \Program Files\THQ\Relic Entertainment\Company of Heroes Online\torrents

    find the dot torrent file

    download that torrent

rename the downloaded folder to "game"

rename the old game folder to "game_old"

copy the new "game" forlder to the install dir

If your ISP is throttling P2P then switching torrent clients shouldn't do anything.

My speeds are jumping around from bad to pretty good on both the official downloader and uTorrent.

Actually most torrent clients are programmed much better than this thing is.

Because I downloaded it at 500kbps in about 3 hours rather than at 50kbps in 4 days.

I already have CoH installed. Kinda wish I could just launch that and not have to have anything to do with fileplanet.

That is kind of my life goal. Don't have anything to do with fileplanet for 10 years, and then I can die happy.
