Update 1.50 is upon us, and the internets are abuzz through all their various tubes about Sony listening to their fans, and responding quickly with a fix for all those PS2 games that had the strange 'pixel-flipping' issue. Most noteably, Metal Gear Solid 2, Okami, and Final Fantasy XII.
With little fanfare, the update is released, and all the happy little PS3 owners awoke to find their favorite games looking just as good as they did when they played them on their quaint little PS2's.
Fanboys residing in their caves, or "gamefaqs forums", scream and writhe in the pain and horror of finding out that all the kotaku reports in the world can't stop Sony from releasing the patch will put an end to about a quarter of their bitching and whining. In a year, their yelling and complaining will seem foolish and old hat, like the people who were scared of the seducing gyrations of Elvis Presley.
Things are looking clear in the eyes of Amatseratsu, and the mildly disturbing plastered abdominal muscles of Vaan are viewable in all their glory.
I can't wait to see what they do in March.

Yeah. Drama Queens for teh win.
In the shell of a fanboy rant.
I'M A TWITTER SHITTER
Also, how can I be having a fanboy rant if all I am ranting about are fanboys who whimper and troll consistantly on the pondscum known as the gamefaqs forums?
Lastly, I am simply referring to Sony in positive, hyperbolic terms to bring some ying to the yang of the over the top anti-Sony fanboy rants. Calling them an evil corporation, and that they built Hitlers car, and other similar lines of argument.
A quarter sounds a lot but when you look at this way: 3/4 of bitching is still remaining
Till sony manage to get 100% BC (and that isn't going to happen as some PS2s aren't even 100% compatible with PS2 games) you'll always get bitching.
Uh...So far, I haven't seen or heard of any PS2 or PS1 games which flat out DO NOT WORK. Some have a couple graphical or sound glitches, but otherwise everything seems groovy.
I should also mention, the PS3 plays Tomba, which is bloody awesome.
What PS2 game does not work, out of curiosity? Keep in mind, Guitar Hero WORKS just fine, but there is no place to hook the controller. YET. Nyko had something at CES.

I would think it would be the
that is the hallmark of the fanboy. Why would anyone feel the need to do so if they weren't biased? Are you claiming to be unbiased and objective of the whole matter?
more like marlowe, m i rite?!?
actually, that 3rd paragraph i began to read in the cadence of john hodgman's reading of his book. terrific.
Yeah, even if you are unbiased, you still need to slip in a "LOL 599!" somewhere. Even saying something along the lines of, "The PS3 is pretty shitty, but its not that shitty," makes you come across as a Sony "Fanboi" in this day and age.
Is this the right thread for that? Because I always wanted to say it.
Actually, I think a truly unbiased person would say "buncha petty nerds, who cares."
Welcome home, buddy.
I think the whole issue was some games looked a little pixelated (only a few, really; I've been playing Beyond Good & Evil and didn't notice this issue at all). It wasn't enough to stop you from playing or even noticing it that much in motion, but it was there. I could only notice it in Okami when I was motionless and about a foot from the screen. But I'm glad this patch is out and Sony is actually listening to some complaints for once. I'll have to grab it later today.
Anyways, thread degeneration into the normal rabble rabble and Sony hate - COMMENCE!
Any PS2 game without progressive scan support looked like garbage, and it was a very big deal to me.
My guess was that the fix was very easy, but Sony did not want to acknowledge it to avoid the issue hitting the mainstream press. When you think about all the bad publicity the PS3 has already gotten, a report of the PS3 not playing PS2 games well would be disastrous.
Which games looked like garbage? I only have a few of them here on campus; Okami, Beyond Good & Evil, Metal Gear Solid 3, Budokai Tenkaichi 2, and Valkyrie Profile 2); and most of them looked fine. I think the worst offender was Budokai Tenkaichi 2, but I couldn't notice the pixelation when it was in motion or if I was further from the screen. Beyond Good & Evil and Valkyrie Profile 2 had no problems. It just doesn't seem as bad as it was being made out to be, for me.
Time to copy those saves back and enjoy FFXII in all its big screen/wireless controller glory.
not yet, but as soon as they fix those I'm getting mine...now on to finish my backlog before nextgen hits me.
It is a bit worrying as far as the implications for a firmware fix for the 1080i problem... I'm sure Sony's heard even MORE about that than the PS2 looking like crap problem, but there's no hint of a fix yet. Yet Sony wasted no time in fixing the latter problem.
It's starting to sound like there is no easy fix for the 1080i issue.
But at least Sony is doing what they can.

I always figured it was to stop piracy, and homebrew was just an innocent bystander.
By which I mean, people kept finding ways to promote piracy on the system, and Sony kept patching these flaws. Unless Sony actually went against legal homebrew projects specifically?
Nope, it was actually all 480i games when de-interlaced to 480p for output over HDMI (or component if that's your gig). If you played over composite the 480i games looked fine, for the most part. I tested several of my games to find out what the problem was, and resident evil 4 was the tell-tale game. It had pixel flipping at 480i, but when I booted it up in 480p it looked beautiful.
I'm going to check this tonight when I get home, but if they truly fixed the de-interlacing that will be awesome. Most HDTVs (particularly rear projection) have gaming lag on 480i without "game mode" on, where "game mode" is code for "make games look like ass but play right". If you play the same game with a 480p source the lag goes away, and all the TV's filters can be applied (which on some TV's is quite a robust and capable array. My SXRD can do amazing things to xbox games.)
End result, if this is true I can soon play all my old 480i games in glorious 480p on my TV. All I need is 2 controller adapters for guitar hero and i can throw away my PS2 entirely. Woo!
If this is true, seems like they should release 1.5 in NA pretty quick.
Nah, I run 4:3 content in 4:3 with black bars on the side. Resident Evil 4 and Tekken 5 both had the same problem whether run in 16:9 or 4:3 (both games have options for screen output and interlaced/progressive). If you set either game to interlaced on either screen format it would give you the dreaded pixel flipping rows, the moment you change the games to 480p the pixel flipping goes away. The problem was due to the PS3's HDMI being unable to output 480i, so the system had to de-interlace the content (and did it very poorly, actually horizontally flipping the pixels in rows at regular intervals).
Also, my opening post was obviously not completely serious, so I am called a fanboy. My god man.
Anyway. I am totally happy with my PS3 in all aspects. It isn't my fault the people who don't own the system have unrealistic expectations. If they actually tried the system (not the demo units) out, like most folk who actually spend time with it, they will change their tune. Not everyone, of course. Some people are just pathetically stubborn.
