Anybody up for "kitchen sink" rpg fun? Something that combines fantasy, sci-fi and everything else? Something that combines and blends the fun and excitement of poorly disguised rip offs of Star Wars, Star Trek, Tolkienesque fantasy, horror and weird adventure into a fevered adolescent's mash-uped dream? Something that lets you play as a Cave Primitive Wooky, or a seductive killer doxy?
That Something has a name; and its name is
Encounter Critical.
From the
Encounter Critical website:
Interstellar war destroyed the navigation beams, leaving thousands of planets isolated and billions of wayfarers stranded in their last ports of call. Out here on the Medieval Rim of the galaxy, the locals don't even know what a spaceship is. For more than eleven years, the navbeam recievers have remained silent ... just tiny blue lights, blinking in the darkness: NO SIGNAL.
They call this planet Vanth, and they call the starport "God City." In the old days, space merchants played the "visitors from the godly realms" routine and the locals - accustomed to sorcery, like most medievals - ate it whole. That lie is a luxury no one can afford anymore, and God City is going native, becoming as much a fantasy metropolis as anything else.
The wizards and warriors of Vanth have accepted that the "sky gods" are here to stay. The star-soldiers and space-merchants wonder if there's anything left of the galaxy they remember. In a situation like this, there's only one reasonable course of action left: make friends, form a party, and go adventuring!
The Adventure:
God City- a place of scum and villainy; of phasic delights and innumerable pleasures. But above all, a place of adventure!
Rumor has it that a Lady Bella seeks brave adventurers to aid her. No not that way...something about a curse, and a ship, and well, adventurous stuff. And there's a reward too I think.
Enter therefore if you will, the dimension of True Scientific Realism, the land of Vanth, the realm of ENCOUNTER CRITICAL!
After lurking for years here at PA, I've decided to combat the ennui of scorching summer by running an adventure of the gonzo faux late 70's rpg
Encounter Critical.
EC is a parody/homage to early 70's rpgs, and its kitchen sink, irreverent, and gonzo style fits PA perfectly. Its also a free pdf download consisting of 28 pages.
I'd like to run the game with at least 4 victims of possible. It takes a certain mind set to keep an EC game from degenerating into a collection of fart jokes, but weird character concepts and smart assery are welcome.
So take a look at the rules and sign up, if you dare!
Also, to get an idea of what an EC character looks like, heres a
crapload of examples from an EC PC contest .
