2010 Console Tournaments: Rules and Info (READ FIRST POST OR I WILL YELL AT YOU)

Zig21Zig21 Registered User regular
edited September 2010 in PAX Archive
Brought to you by TARP.

This thread is for rules, registration guidelines, updates, schedules, and questions regarding console tournaments ONLY. This thread will NOT cover console freeplay or any other events, including handheld, PC, tabletop, etc. Please note that all information is subject to change between now and September 3rd.

Note: All mini-tournaments (groups A-E) are capped at 32 players each. Also, you cannot enter more than one game per group.

Schedule
Friday, September 3rd
2:00pm: Group A (Lumines Live!, Ikaruga, Soul Calibur)
4:30pm: Group B (Blur, Puzzle Bobble, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix)
7:00pm: Group C (Joust, Peggle, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix)
9:30pm: Group D (Link's Crossbow Training, Pac-Man Championship Edition, Beautiful Katamari)

Saturday, September 4th
11:00am: Group E (Toy Soldiers, Galaga, Geometry Wars 2)
2:00pm - 6:00pm: Super Street Fighter IV (X-Box 360)
7:00pm - 12:00am: Super Smash Bors. Brawl (Wii)

Sunday, September 5th
1:00pm - 4:00pm: Mario Kart Wii (Wii)

Registration
  • Registration for ALL console tournaments begins on Friday, September 3rd, right outside of the console tournament area.
  • Signups for Saturday and Sunday tournaments will be limited on Friday and Saturday. Unrestricted registration begins 2 hours before a specific event. See an individual tournament's section below for more information.
  • Each tournament has two lists: Main and Standby. Once the Main list has been filled up, you can only sign up on Standby. This means you can only enter the tournament if someone from the Main list fails to show up (odds of this happening are generally pretty good). Entrants from Standby are on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • If you do not have a complete team for a team tourney, you must enter on Standby. If you can subsequently find a team before the tournament starts AND there is room on the Main list, you will be moved into a guaranteed spot. Otherwise, you will be paired up with whoever else we choose from the Standby list.

You may bring your own controller if you wish. For wireless controllers, you MUST have a link cable.

During a match, the winner of an individual game must keep the same character. Loser may switch characters if they wish to do so. If the loser decides to select a new character, the winner may switch Ultras based on the matchup. These rules ONLY apply when playing a single opponent. At the start of a new match against another player, you may select any character you want.

To configure your controls, start a match and use the in-game pause menu, then exit back to Character Change. If you forget to do so and start the match, you may pause mid-game to change them BUT your opponent has the option of either restarting the game or resuming as-is.

    Format: Qualifiers
    • Players will be divided into 32 pools, each containing up to 8 players
    • Each pool will be organized into an 8 player single elimination bracket
    • Each match will be best of 3 games
    • The winner of each pool advances to the semi-finals

    Format: Semi-Finals and Finals
    • The winning players from each pool will be re-seeded and placed into a new 32 player single elimination bracket
    • Each match will be best of 3 games
    • If time allows, bracket semi-finals and grand finals will be best of 5 games (grand finals may be best of 7)

    FAQ:
This post will be used to answer popular questions.

Q: Do you know anything about handheld events?
A: No, now get off my lawn.

Q: When will rules for (insert game) be finished?
A: Mainly when I get the chance to play everything. While all information is subject to change up to the event itself, any game with detailed information is more or less finalized.

    Q: What are the prizes?
A: We guarantee medals for top 4 in any tournament (and they look fabulous). We might also have additional prizes for specific tournaments if provided by exhibitors.

Kind of disappointed that the Brawl Tournament is at the same time (?) as the JoCo and P&S concert, but I know you have to schedule awesome things at the same time to deal with the rush.

Sweetness! Assuming we're done qualifying for the Rock Band tournament (assuming their is a Rock Band tournament ...), the group D mini-tourneys look like fun.

No team console tourneys ... did these have too many drops in previous years?

We can only provide regular 360 controllers. We can't provide a table for your TE, but feel free to use any extra chairs that are available.

Sorry for threadjacking, but the past 2 Primes and East there's been a semi-official Rock Band/RB2 tournament. Is there hope of a repeat appearance this year?

Also I'm sure console freeplay will feature impromptu BlazBlue KOTH insanity.

Yeah, I have nothing to do with the Rock Band tournament. Although hopefully I can get enough information to direct people who ask me about it, since every year they are sent on a wild goose chase through the entire expo center.

Standard karts only as in Standard Kart S, M and L? That's like playing Double-Dash without a kart-mate, the whole gimmick of this game was the bikes. Why only the standard kart?

If you add bikes everyone would play bikes.

Might as well call it the Mario Bike tournament.

Oh, I've only been to Prime '07 and East '10, and we had Double Dash back then and I don't remember there being one at East so I didn't know.

Would be fine by me, I mean is there some bike glitch I'm not aware of? Otherwise it is a big chunk of the game. Seems like restricting it to one kart would be like restricting Brawl to one (or three, I suppose) character(s).

for the brawl tourney please don't have pirate ship a choice Ness cant be beat there, also no green hill zone its a terrible stage and falco and dedede can chain grab to the walk off areas for free kills very easily. your better off just having these stages ...
    Battlefield
    Yoshi's Island
    Smashville
    Lylat Cruise
    Pokémon Stadium (Melee)
    Final Destination
    Castle Siege
