It's like a program that lets you keep your IM clients open while in-game and I cannot for the fucking life of me recall what the hell it is. Someone help me out here

x-fire is an IM network of it's own. If you want to have all your normal networks available you could try raptr. It's similar to X-fire, but can log into just about every IM network ever, including PSN and Xbox Live.
How does Raptr compare to other multiprotocol clients like Trillian or Pidgin? I'm hesitant to switch over to it (getting all the different protocols' info in is always such a hassle, since I'd forgotten it all by now), only to discover it doesn't support something basic like font size or metacontacts.

It's definitely a bit rough around the edges compared to something like Trillian or Digsby. No metacontacts, minimal / nonexistant support for reporting or blocking spammers, no skinning. The main thing it brings to the table is x-fire, psn, and xbox live support and an ingame overlay.
It doesn't seem as robust to me, but it is cool because you can connect steam xbl psn and shit and track all your achievements and trophies, even from WoW
