The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So last night, Ken Levine announced a new Bioshock game. This is pretty crazy for an industry full of leaks and stuff! It's called Bioshock Infinite, and while obviously it still has Bioshock in the name, Levine says that it means to be a new type of game!
The most notable change is that this game will NOT be set under water! It will be a city in the sky. Secondly, Infinite is set in the year 1912, so about 50 years before the first Bioshock game was set. This city in the sky is called Columbia, and Levine says that the setting is meant to show the optimism people had at the turn of the century, pointing to America being one of the rare democracies in the world at the time, as well as the immense advances in technology in such a short span of time (radio, flight, etc.)
There isn't much gameplay information, but let's get excited!
I watched the trailer just now and I'm excited. I still need to play the 2nd Bioshock game though.

Neat. I might pick it up if the gameplay's more interesting. Bioshock had a cool story and atmosphere but it was pretty uninteresting to play, I thought.

Man, I've always felt like I was the only person in the whole damn world who didn't think Bioshock was incredible. The gameplay felt to me like a dumbed-down, consolized take on System Shock 2. And frankly I didn't find the setting particularly engaging either. It had some potential, but I didn't like the artistic direction at all. I can't really comment on the story since I never finished it.

that was a beautiful trailer
they've definitely maxed out their "inject yourself with superpowers" credit with me, though
they're obviously not tossing plasmids out the window entirely, but I'm curious to see what direction they go the whole superpowers thing
what i find interesting is that he says there are no sacred cows, and that's why there was no big guy in a suit with a little girl.
I mean, I think that's true as far as they're done with rapture as a setting, but there was still the big guy with robot hands and the floaty rose girl
so they're at least throwing emphasis on some iconic bioshock-y stuff, if in a new incarnation
he says that robot guy 'isn't what we think it is' but i'll decide that for myself kevin levine :x
This looks interesting but I feel like they're starting to pump out the games a bit fast now
But I new world can make things interesting and feel fresh
Staying cautiously optimistic on this one
For what it's worth, these are some of the same guys who did Bioshock 1. Bioshock 2 was done by a different team. According to the Joystiq interview, they've been working on Infinite for over two years.
The timing is certainly fortuitous, but they aren't exactly pumping them out.

Maybe the robot is a hint that they are going away with superpowers and instead switching to robotics?
Some steampunk shit maybe
Yeah but that rose lady wasn't a robot?
No she isn't because she's probably the guinea pig for the actual superpower testing
You probably go through the whole game trying to save her
Damsel in distress type shit
Good point. Kinda hard to save someone when you are falling out of the sky imo. :P
Man I have a feeling this game is going to scare the piss out of us who have a fear of heights. All jumping from balcony to balcony where you mess up you fall for like a mile down.
also also are there any pictures of the secret room in Arkham Asylum where the blueprints for Arkham City are, or the pictures from the secret room in the batcave where Robin's suit is?
what are the odds of a young John(?) Ryan not being in this game
Andrew, actually.
I hope he's not in it. I'd like them to take this in its own direction without being like, "AND THAT IS HOW ANDREW RYAN GOT HIS IDEA FOR RAPTURE". I think there's enough room for this game to stand on its own.

Hopefully the new environment doesn't take away from that "OH SHIIIII-" feeling that Rapture manages to create so well.
instead of water, there's gonna be clouds
and a whooooooooole lotta falling
Yeah, but a bright, jingoistic, turn of the century cloud city doesn't exactly evoke the same kind of fear that a dark, depressing, crumbling underwater city does.
Not to mention the Splicers, which are fucking creepy as shit.

instead of getting married to Rapture, give the same treatment to other American zeitgeists
hot dog this is the neatest thing

a little gameplay update is definitely in order

the artists who work on these games must have swingin' dicks
seems
pretty dang cool, actually
I am surprised to say this, but I'm really looking forward to seeing this game released
the 1910's are not exactly the most thoroughly explored decade in video game narrative, even if you count WWI.
But I reckon I'll follow ryan's lead and stay cautiously optimistic

Dibs on a spiked-piston arm for punching people with
steampunk's been getting a lot of bad rep lately
but
it's still a pretty cool concept
and as always, obsessive fans tend to spoil it for the rest of us

It'd be nice to encounter a few hubs where everyone is not necessarily out to get you
it was a pretty compelling trailer
what happened to that lady

we need at least
a video
to make a decent thread
also I would like a thread about Costume Quest

guessing not, though they seem to be implying that the enemies in the game aren't crazy exactly, they are more wicker-man style insular and agressive
I was close
I just kept on thinking Adrian and then went with John

Well, it won't be out before 2012, so you can start saving your shillings and tuppence now.
