There were parts of the combat I enjoyed. A couple of the boss fights in particular were memorable, because they were just hard enough to require a plan without being so hard they got frustrating.
See, I was professional with Mina cause we worked together and it wasn't until I accidentally hit "suave" and she was all *giggle giggle* Michael, stop that I realized what I was supposed to be doing with her.
Mina seems to much prefer professional when you're just getting to know her.
I'll try suaving at the ladies a bit, you guys! Geez
Nah, mack on who you want to mack on. It'll end up more natural and more of "your" story.
Yeah, it's essential to play-a-role not just try and game the dialogue trees for best results. The way everything seems to organically flow is just amazing.

Honestly I'm not sure there's a "best result" 99% of the time. What makes this game amazing and why I like it more than Mass Effect is that making meaningful choices in during an interaction with an NPC isn't all about dumping your skill points into your "intimidate" stat so that you can unlock an "I Win!" dialogue option that's obviously better than all other options. Every approach has its virtues and drawbacks.
How do I piss off Leland? I want to punch the shit outa him, but I can't ever seem to get a rise.
What do I do to slam him head on the table?
Just be an insulting smartass. Also, Leland appreciate the ruthless-but-efficient operative so being merciful and clumsy lowers his opinion of your abilities.

Punching him only comes at the very end, before they take you away. You get the option to do that.
In order to headslam him though, read Optimus' post. IIRC (and I'm not certain here) you need to get him to like you instead, by being effectively ruthlessly calculating (not necessarily violent) in your reasons to his questions. Basically that your actions have consequences and you have no regrets about them because you're seeking results.
Combine that with hiding information from him when he goes fishing for details.
After that it's just a case of waiting until the final part of the game. Reject the first option to punch him.
I don't know whether you specifically need to be less than a 10 on his score in order to still be able to headslam him though.

Meta-gaming for perks is 'best result'.
I set 100 mines in the training room just to get the perk since I never use the fucking things. But first playthrough should always be 'seat-of-the-pants' choices. Save the FAQ for later. (Or at least a puzzle that you just can't get past.)

I love the perk system in Alpha Protocol. You're an asshole, you get perks. You're a boring professional type, you get perks. You're a hobo with a shotgun? Perks everywhere.

I'm not as in love with AP as some people (to the point I could easily accept that it's a bad game), but man. Perks, it did right. Glad they showed up again to an extent in New Vegas, and it's the one thing from AP I want in everything. (or at least everything with any kind of RPG elements.)
I love the most about AP is that there is no morality system. No reason to get lots of lightside or paragon or friendship points or having to stay nuetral-good or high/low chaos.
I can RP however I want and the consequences are in the story, not in the metagame.

If there is one thing that I've always felt is incongruous with the design of far too many RPG's, it's that freaking karma bar and the way it affects your options. I think it's a holdover from D&D roots to be honest. It leads to playing to type, not playing to the situation. You deliberately have to set out to be "good" or "evil" because otherwise you miss out on bonuses or lose the option to say / do things that you want to in a given scenario.

I really cannot express how irritating I find things like "karma bars". They make things feel so horribly artificial when you can do a nightmarishly terrible thing one moment, then a minute later get treated like some hallowed saint because you mostly do good things. AP was awesome about that; the conversations and game choices were about pushing things in certain directions without quite knowing the results, as opposed to something jarringly artificial like the Mass Effect's "you must be This Good to use this option".

100% agree with you, the dialogue system is so extensive and pretty much everything you do is rewarded "Your handler likes you, get a perk; your handler hates you, get a perk etc" that there is no point trying to fish the tree looking for the best "reward" from any situation. It's just not that kind of game.
Decide on what kind of twat (psychotic twat, emotionless twat, sex pest twat) you are and play that role.
Due to needing to reinstall Windows thanks to some arcane conflicts with my video card drivers, I have lost my Alpha Protocol saves. This occurs to me as I begin to reinstall the game.
This brings to mind two things
1. I wish it were possible to sync cloud storage for save files on any game you wanted.
2. I do not look forward to doing the combat segments again, especially with my piddly-ass Recruit skills.
You've made me start a new game of AP. I'm playing as a mission focused newbie who's going to panic when the end of the Middle East mission happens. A lot of "Shoot in the face" options are going to be taken.
I started a new game. No armor, only the base clothes. Assault rifles and no stealth. The game is kinda fun when you don't give a fuck about alarms and just murder everyone.
Also, best buds with Heck, like always. I can never change that.

Non-Combat Design too. Or at least in Moskau's case.

Even easier, just symbolic link your saves folder to a seperate data harddrive.
Or don't have steam on your windows drive/partition.
That's what I did. I have a 500GB external HD that I keep Steam + MP3s on. That way no matter what PC changes I need to make, I never lose them.

Personally I just keep saves for games like Mass Effect and such in my Amazon Cloud Drive or whatever
