my buddy who is in the army often explains to me the effectiveness of a blade versus a firearm at close proximity
In the military, for up close operations I believe they usually put a blade on the END of their gun.
I don't think a lot of modern guns have bayonets
They have a combat knife specifically placed in an area for quick removal and stabbing
Most modern combat rifles still have a bayonet lug and bayonet. They get used very rarely, but something as useful as the bayonet isn't going to just fade away.

I don't really see them putting a bayonet lug on say a SMG, much shorter gun, much more likely they carry a tactical combat knife.

then again with railgun technology rolling out in the near future for navy destroyers we might not need them.

As far as ancient weaponry goes, I'm pretty fond of the unassuming spear. Cheap, easy to mass produce, and capable of fucking up a heavily armored knight on horse when wielded by a group of illiterate, pox-ridden, peasants. The spear is an excellent force equalizer. Used even into the gunpowder age as pikes to protect the arquibusiers or musketmen as the reloaded. Eventually some wise guy came up with the idea of sticking a spear on the end of the gun and the bayonet was invented. Quite handy really.
