Time travel with dave is like back to the future.

There is the 12 Monkeys time travel style, which is your shenanigans to change cause the future that you know.
There is the Back to the Future time travel style, which is consistent but for Biff returning to the future to drop off the Delorean, where anything you do in the past changes the course of history (one timeline).
And there is the Terminator Time Travel style, which is "Fuck it, we got robots."

It's not quite like Back to the Future though. Dave could hypothetically go back in time and stop himself from being born and wouldn't suddenly disappear.
Really it's identical to Trunks in Dragonball Z but I doubt most people thought too hard about how that worked. Dave can't affect his own future, only the future of an alternate Dave. But even then that's backwards because if anything it's the time-traveling Daves that are "alternate Dave," not the one whose future gets meddled with
but yeah no I'm just gonna shut up and go to sleep, BttF is a fairly good approximation of how it works, minus the fact that BttF's time travel doesn't actually make the slightest lick of sense if you think about it.
Also, surprise, Karkat is pretty willing to help his friends out with romantic stuff, if absolutely nothing else.

Time Travel in DBZ doesn't make sense, because trunks traveled through time to meet Goku and then traveled slightly in the future to fight the androids, and then traveled all the way back into the future and it was his own timeline.

no time travel makes sense because it's all 100% based on intuition and logic that has no basis in reality. We can't know how time travel works until we travel in time. frankly, I hope we never do.

There's two timelines. The original Bad Future one and the normal one.
Trunks time travels by selecting any point along the normal timeline that he wants to go to. Anything he does in the past of the parallel universe doesn't affect his own future but has an effect on the normal future.
I remember Cell introducing a plothole with the time travel that you could actually explain away if you accept that Cell's time travel creates a third parallel timeline but I don't remember now I was like 11.
