PS3's and the repairing of.

Alrighty, so I got a ps3 over a year ago for about $70 since it was on it's way out according to the owner. Anyway I planned on trying my hand at some do-it-yourself repair since I've had pretty good luck with my own broken electronics and consoles (got an xbox 360 that had red ringed and its still working a year and a half later). Funny thing was it worked perfectly all this time (although the laser is probably a little weak but that's what I expected when I got it) the only problem I had with it is it started making grinding noises when playing (had it in the vertical position till it started doing that, and now it's on it's side and working alright but it's starting to struggle reading and loading discs) so could having it in the upright position this whole time cause an alignment issue with the drive? Basically I'm going to take apart the drive, replace the laser, then try to put it back together in the proper position. So has anyone had this problem and fixed it doing the above? Are there any good tutorials for such a task? I'm pretty confident I can do it but I want to be as informed as possible beforehand so everything goes smoothly and I actually fix this thing :P

You might want to call Sony first just to see how much they charge before you void your warranty. Because Blu-ray diodes were in short supply for sometime and Sony is using smaller diodes now.

Yeah I looked into sending it in (its still sealed and everything) and it will cost about $150 (which is pretty much halfway to a new ps3). So I probably won't be doing that.

How expensive is a replacement drive? It would probably be an easier fix than replacing the laser.

I've been looking around a bit, and it seems the drive is paired to the motherboard, similar to the hard drive in the old xbox and the dvd drive in the 360.

Getting mine repaired by RSOL this week. They're the only company offering a one-year warranty and they charge $99 and have same-day turnaround.
