Speaking of Half Life: Source, how is Black Mesa doing these days?
(the mod not the place)
Most likely it has suffered the fate of most mods and will never see the light of day.
They said they would have it out last year, and the complete and utter silence since then isn't exactly encouraging. Then again, if they were that close to finishing it then maybe we'll see it in a few years even if it continues to move at a glacial pace.
Edit:
We can't really complain about a free game, but trouble is I'd gladly pay for it if it meant, well, actually getting it. Really it's just a shame Valve didn't do Half Life: Source as a proper, true remake in the first place. If they started one now, people would just bitch about how community-unfriendly the move would be, even though I really wish they'd go ahead and do it.
Seriously, you had a mod team trying to put together a game with HL2 level assets, that would have actually been bigger than Half-Life 2, all for free.
Even in the best of times, mods have a less than steller completion rate. Take all the trouble you have with a normal mod and the multiply it by the large team size needed to accomplish a job this size.. It was just a recipe for an slow death.

Doesn't Valve have a history of picking up promising teams (who often started modding) to make new games?
Black Mesa seems exactly the kind of project they'd support, but they haven't so far - it would be a bit late to do so now.
Well, didn't they make the right decision? You can take that phrase of "didnt they promise to be out this year?" and repeat it in 2009, 2008,2007, so on.
I mean technically you could say they follow valve time, but so far everyone they've bought up (except minerva dude, he's working on ep 3 I think) has released something quickly after being bought.
I'm not sure I share the conclusion of the article that this is a project Valve is actively trying to get off the ground, but I can definitely see where they're coming from. They do the animated shorts themselves, they even do the comics themselves. I mean, if Valve were to announce that they were going to be selling, say, a 30 minute Team Fortress 2 movie, the fans would be over the moon.
That's the thing though, I couldn't really see them doing a Half-Life movie. I'm not really sure the game really has that much you could put into a film, and I'm not even sure a Live Action feature would work in the first place (assuming that's what they went for).
I got Deus Ex a few months back in the Steam sale, and considering how much fun I've had with it in 2010 I can only imagine how mind-blowing it was in 2000.
Wut.
I played Deus Ex and it wasn't very good. I'm sure it was good back then, but I didn't have much fun with it.

The controls were especially not fun.
The controls are basically the same as every FPS since forever.
I don't think so. I remember having trouble with some of the controls being really strange in the context of modern shooters. I'd be more specific but I'm drawing a blank here, it's been a while.

Maybe he's thinking of Deus, which had a bit more of a messier layout.

"]" as "zoom."
";" as reload.
"X" as crouch.
Or "+" and "/" as quick save and quick load.
Yeah, those controls were wonky as hell, but they were editable too.
Edit: gah, beat.
Yeah, but the controls weren't my main problem with the game. I just didn't have much fun with it. The exploration was cool as hell, but the game itself didn't really grab me.
I'll give you reloading, but you're being obtuse about the others.
Right click for use was fairly common back in the day. Especially in a game that had you using items frequently, like this. For example, Mafia 1 also has right click bound to use
Crouch was also commonly bound to c back in the day, or x if they also had seperate keybinds for turning, especially before mouselook was ubiquitous.
drop/throw item is also bound to tab, which I'd say most people used more often than middle mouse button
Brackets for scopes isn't uncommon either, heck, I think even games as late as SC:CT used it like that.
If anything, the weirdest binding in Deus Ex is quicksave/load in num +/-, but that's probably because the entire F key row is used up by augs
At least X is easily reachable. Semicolon as reload is just outrageous.
E: Oh yeah that's a good point, although I think it was toggle, wasn't it?
You could set crouch to toggle, though it wasn't the default. Every game I've played since then that makes me hold shift or something for crouch and doesn't offer a toggle option makes me nerdrage.

Not liking Deus Ex is valid (if contentious) opinion, but don't be surprised when people start piling on you when you're exasperating "wut" when someone says how good it is, as if that's some crazy, backwards idea.
And I actually use X to crouch in shooter because I'm weeeeiiird.

In most games, I can understand where and how people don't like things.
But with Deus Ex, I just simply cannot.
Maybe it's as a poster said on a previous page, that when you play it at the time it's awesome and ground breaking, but when you play it now it was so good that it became a trope and it seems like an awful imitation.
Also, to fulfill the, uh, prophecy, for lack of a better word, I'm now installing it.

The only things that I can think of that might hamper enjoyment these days are the dated looks of the graphics (which I personally love) and the aiming system (which is still obnoxious). It's one of those games that I still really enjoy just the way it is and don't care if it gets an update/remake, but would still enjoy playing one to see a modern take on the game. So far, DX3 seems like it's going to sort of satiate that curiosity.

One of the main reasons crouch is always bound to spacebar. Hold it forever if needed and easily reach the rest of the keys.

Heh, I have a spare copy of plain sight, hl2, episode 1, and the preorder bonus copy of monkey island special edition. If anyone wants em just ask nicely :P
I would be eternally grateful to get the copy of Plain Sight if it's still availabe.

In case anyone missed it. Priceless.
edit. Straight from the WTF folder: Valve was making a flying fairy RPG before L4D.
o_O
I'd buy it.
really good
i wish it were still on sale so i could convince more people to buy it
Can't play it though. i need to bloody well finish the games I'm on now...
Didn't he just say that it was so horrible that even they couldn't figure out how they could possibly make something that bad?
EDIT: This is interesting, Valve pretty much saying now that there's no real way there'd be a Half-Life movie, unless they were to do it themselves:

E: I just looked up the controls, here are the problems:
Use was right click?
Crouch was X?
Drop/throw item was middle mouse button?
Toggle scope and laser sight were [ and ] respectively?
Reload was ;?
Those were pretty weird controls, no matter how you slice it.
