Help Me Make the Most of My Old Macbook!

I currently have an intel macbook, purchased in 2008, but it is not doing so well. A few months ago the backlight died, and while I thought it was the inverter, it turns out that it wasn't (cost of replacing the entire screen is more than I'm willing to put into it at this point). I'm still using it via an external monitor, but I'm buying a new Macbook Pro in a couple of weeks, so after transferring my data, I'm not going to be using my old laptop anymore.

Are there any creative ways I can use it after I've moved on (I mean, other than as a paperweight)? I'd hate to just have it go to waste, and if it can be useful for SOMEthing, even though the display is broken, I'd be happy to do so.

Any suggestions are welcome, and thanks in advance!

Sell it on eBay? People buy broken Macs all the time. If it was a desktop or an old all-in-one there would be a lot of things you could do with it, but a laptop? Not really.

Well, I suppose that's an option. How much would a macbook with a broken screen (and slightly cracked casing) go for, do you think?

Can I jump on this thread too? I also have a macbook bought in 08 and the disc drive has started to go on it. Tried cleaning the lens and resetting PMB or whatever it is but it still won't read discs like it should.

Should i take it to the geniuses? If it warrrants a repair how much will it cost me? Would a remastering help? I heard that Macs don't really do that.

I only ask because the nearest Mac store is quite far away and it's a bother to get to, but I'm not sure what else to do with this thing.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, btw, just seemed like a convenient time and place to post this.

No, I don't mind. Especially as it seems that there isn't much to be done with mine. :(

Personally, unless it's still under warranty, the Geniuses are just going to frustrate you. Locally I have two shops that specialize in Apple repair, and I found that to be far more helpful/inexpensive. They are really pretty awesome, but who knows what your area has. I mean, the shop I took mine too is totally capable of replacing my screen, but I'm not putting $500 into a laptop that I'm planning to replace, and which I can use with an external monitor just fine. To take it to the Genius bar it was like, $750 just to look at it. And I was like, yeah....no.

edit: And my searches on ebay are inconclusive. I am not much of an ebayer. :(

While it might not be applicable in this thread, considering the state of your screen... there are a lot of charities BEGGING for old computers to give to impoverished schools. Any time one of my computers reaches the end of its life, I wipe it clean, do a fresh install of the latest free OS and hand it over.

No idea. Poke around on eBay under the completed auctions.

Yeah, as posted above, I've done that. Maybe I'll try CL. I'm not a regular ebay user, and finding anything approximating the state of my current macbook. :/

edit: Couldn't I use it as, like, backup storage or something? Or is that just retarded?

If you do that, just take out the HD and put it in an enclosure.

If you go to ifixit.com, there should be MacBook disc drives on sale for fairly cheap there, along with infographic instructions on how to replace it.
