Xbox 360 / Universal Remote

So over the weekend I headed over to Wal-Mart to buy some coax cable, some splitter, and a few other things. While there, I noticed they had a Logitech 510 Harmony remote on sale for $49. Now in the main room of the house I've got a DVD Player, TV, Home Theatre system, and a VCR, and thus I've got four remotes to juggle.

So I figured this was the perfect opportunity to try to consolidate everything. The DVD player in another room of the house went out recently, so I actually moved my 360 into the main room as a temporary DVD player.

The 510 is...finicky. Sometimes I'll operate it and it'll switch on the AV system and 360 but leave the TV off. Sometimes it'll switch on the TV and AV system but not the 360, and sometimes it'll switch on the tv but not switch it to the proper video channel.

So to be frank the 510 isn't quite working as well as I had hoped, and if I can't get it to shape up by the end of the week it's going back to the store.

So here I ask: Does anyone have any reasonably-priced non-logitech universal remotes to recommend, with 360 compatibility a must?

You might just need to mess with the timings in between commands inside the remote's software. The Harmony remotes are seriously boss.

Is all of your equipment near each other?

With Logitech, you get what you pay for. It might be worth bumping up to a higher quality Harmony remote.

Yeah, all on the same shelf. Where can I find a guide on this timing thing?

The problem is that, even at $50 it was a bit of a stretch for me to purchase it. Had it been normal price I wouldn't have given it a second look.

Just think about the time you would wait if you were doing the controls manually. Like, if you turn on the TV with the regular remote, don't you already have a sense of when it's ok to try and hit the button to change inputs?

Also, with the problems you were describing about it turning things on and off at the wrong times--it's possible the remote just got out of synch with the states of the devices. In other words, it thinks your TV is on and your receiver is off, when in fact they're both turned on. Hit the help button on your remote for a guide on getting things back in synch.

Also also, be sure to get out of the habit of ever ever turning your equipment on and off by any method other than the Harmony remote; it'll screw things up as mentioned above.

Pretty much what everyone else said. I have the harmony 700 and can vouch for all the nuances of what people said. It's either the timing or it is out of sync.

One way to get it back in sync is to shut EVERYTHING off manually, then walk into another room or such and hit the All off button and let it do it's thing. From there everything should be good to go.

And the timing is huge, especially with the TVs that take a few seconds to turn on. You can set up the timing when it's hooked up to your PC. Once it's all said and done, the thing works like a dream!

You need to use the software, not the web interface. Its somewhere in there.

Yeah you shouldn't be having any problems with that remote and the components you're using. I bought the same 510 model refurbished for 29.99 on Amazon years ago and I've never had any issues with it operating everything without a hitch. I've used it with a PVR, a 360, the LCD TV, and 2 different AVRs (Just recently got a new receiver and switching the remote over to operate it took less than 5 minutes).

Like others have said, I think you might just have to start from scratch and/or mess with the timing patterns a bit.

If you're going to switch brands I'm afraid you're likely to have even worse luck. Logitech is pretty much the gold standard now for universal remotes that actually work like they're supposed to.
