Okay, so I have an iPod video (5th gen), white and sexy with 80gb just waiting for me to fill with stuff. The problem is that most TV shows you can't get off of the iTunes stores and what not are .avi or .mpg. iPods only accept .mp4 or .mov.
I looked around and tried finding some free conversion utilities to no avail. Every single google search I did popped up some other POS utility that I needed to pay to use. I even tried using the watermarked versions of a couple programs, but no. NO.
I want pristine video on my iPod. I need conversion. Help.
.mp4 seems to be only a container*, so you might not even need to transcode the content. Here's some guide at doom9.org with links to free software to do this.
*ie it doesn't specify one encoding method for video and audio, wikipedia says that you can use H.264 (eg. x.264), mpeg-4 (eg. divx, xvid), mpeg-2 (dvds) or mpeg-1 for video and AAC (eg. FAAC) and mp3 for audio.

That should take care of just about ANY video you've got.
