I hate not being able to figure this out on my own but I can't quite find an answer to this question.
The situation (hypothetical):
I have an infected windows xp PC. Although I can "easily" purge the infection with standard methods of either 1) nuke from orbit 2) extensive scans I am trying to learn more about linux. What concerns do I have (if any) of an infection that normally will jump to networked shares or removable media given the opportunity of propagating itself when I boot into ubuntu and have the windows drive as a secondary drive? I want to salvage files from it that may or may not be infected. Obviously I will run a scan or three with whatever I can get my hands on to make sure the files are not the source themselves but presuming the files check out do I risk the virus jumping to a usb drive just by virtue of being connected when I move the files?
Since I feel like I have that awkwardly worded:
I boot into an Ubuntu liveCD. I want to move "important" files from desktop 1 (infected) to desktop 2 (clean) via usb drive. Is there any risk of this infection latching onto the drive and then jumping to the clean PC when I move the files?
My initial guess would be that since the virus is not given rights to execute in ubuntu it would not be able to even start therefore not jumping to the removable media and eventually making it's way to the new PC. I am not even at beginner level for ubuntu and I am teaching myself as I go along so I apologize if this is basic stuff. I posted this in the security thread over in Moe's Tech. Forum, and although I do believe Tetra I'd like a second (or third or fourth etc) opinion on the issue. My google-fu has been a monstrous failure. I figured I'd start asking here then branch to the ubuntu forums if required. The gnu/linux thread over in Moe's seems to be more devoted to other stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated!
The virus won't even start. Viruses in Windows have to be executed by Windows via a number of possible methods. If you're booting from Ubuntu you're completely circumventing the OS, the virus won't be able to start, especially since if you're booting from a Ubuntu LiveCD.
