Cool pieces of furniture and other interior decoration ideas (now with pics)
So I moved to a new place. It's one bedroom one bathroom one kitchen. It's pretty big. I'd say around 900 sq feet. I'm moving a few pieces of furniture from my current place (single person couch and a tv + its stand), so as you can imagine I have loooots of room that I need to fill.
For context, this is in a southern California beach town. The building is half a block away from the beach. It was built in 1970 so it's somewhat old (and awesome... there's a fountain with a statue of a goddess in the central courtyard and other fun neat details). As such it has a nice old beachtown vibe to it.
Anyway. I need furniture and interior decoration suggestions for a place like this. One thing I thought of is a hammock. The building gets an incredibly amazing cross-breeze so I figured I'd put one right in front of the window, at a spot that also gets the sun in the afternoons.
Generally, I'd say pick some colors and start with that. Having shit that matches does a lot for a space, especially in kitchens. If you pick a ball park for a pallet, you will have an easier time shopping. It will change it from a situation where you could buy any random thing, to where you see a floor rug thats the perfect color.
I'd look through some interior decorating blogs for ideas. I like Apartment Therapy but I'm sure there are many more.
You can get a beach feel with just a light breezy color pallet, or with nice antiques with appropriate woods and wicker, It really just depends on what you'd want. I'd just really suggest getting some stuff on the walls, It will do a lot for making a room feel less empty.
Yup, no matter what furniture you get, to me a place never feels occupied until I have stuff on the walls, sort of like a city skyline with no sky. As for specific pieces of furniture, that all depends on your tastes, but I'm personally trying to recreate this, and it will be the center of my collection, and it will be glorious! It's always nice to have at least one piece of furniture be unique, something that has a story behind it.

Are you going to live there a long time? If you're just going to do a 1 year lease and bounce, you might not want to invest in a bunch of heavy furniture.
Out of curiosity, what part of SoCal? The wife and I are considering moving, but need to stay in the LA-ish area.
As far as suggestions go, I would go with a couch upgrade, maybe one of those L-shaped ones. Use it to divide the living area from the kitchen and entrance to the bedrooms. It will make it seem like there are more rooms, and eat up some of the grand expanse of space.
I agree with the couch upgrade idea, but I think a sectional would make the apartment feel cramped. I would probably get a couch, some kind of dining room set (or at least get some chairs/stools for the counter setup you've got going), and maybe hang a descent sized tv on the wall if there's enough money left at that point.
Alternatively, forget about the furniture and just put a pool table in the middle of the living room.
this place is AWESOME, first off. maybe shop around at vintage stores or online for actual 70s pieces, if you want to stick with the overall look of the place.
That bar seems oddly low. Im guessing the black chairs on the other wall go to it?
Are you trying to get the tv watching space in there? Consider that the only good wall for it is the one facing the kitchen, so you'll probably want the couch to fact that way unless you want always lounge on it sideways. You'll want something thats not too bulky so that it is far and clear from the door, and probably with a low profile back so that you can watch from the kitchen.
Hammocks with stands are kind of big, would you be able to mount one to the ceiling? They make sort of small, chair sized ones if you can.
The carpet is a little dark so you may want to define your couch space with a floor rug.
Id find some ways to introduce a few touches of non-neutral colors. The wood has a nice tone so you might want to take a picture of that out with you while you shop.
You get alot of light, so plants are a quick way to add some color and life. Just some simple vines like these guys:
They are damn near impossible to kill, and if you take care of them, you can run them down book shelves as they grow for nice effects. You could probably get some funky vases, I'd look for unique stuff like retrovm is saying.
My last suggestion is to think hard about storage, because having appropriate places for things will go great lengths to fight clutter.

The bar stools you are referring to are too high for this bar, yes, so I'll have to put them in storage and pick actual chairs.

I actually don't watch much TV so I haven't gotten service for it yet. The TV I have is mostly for my 360. But you're right, I'm planning on placing the TV against that wall so that it's viewable from the kitchen (and also like you said it's the only appropriate place for it.

I got this hammock and this stand (bronze). I think I have enough room for them between the kitchen bar and the window (although the angle I took the picture from doesn't show that very well). The hammock is in the "warm colors" category but they said it's random since they're all hand-made.

Yeah, that's probably one of the last things I'll buy after I see what everything else looks like together.

Plants are a good idea, yeah. I will also buy them last though.

(I'm assuming you're doing well since you're living in a 900 square foot apartment half a block from the beach in socal.)
My budget is $2,000. That's for everything, not individual pieces.
The place is actually not that expensive - I got a really sweet deal on it.
