PS3 Update Asploded?

Hey all,
So I updated my PS3 late tonight, and it turned off and turned back on. I started to load up PSN and the system shut down. No lights, no beeps, nothing.

Now it's totally dead, won't turn back on at all, nada. It's an original 60gb, so I really don't want to replace it with a newer system..and I'm not sure it was the firmware update that did it since it's been randomly crashing once in a while.

Any thoughts? Is the power supply difficult to replace? Anything I should test first? I replaced the HD with a bigger drive a few months ago, so I dont think that's the problem.

Thanks guys..

You always have at least one option: call their customer service department and rage.

It's not like PS3 firmware updates haven't bricked consoles before, right? They might have a "replace it first and ask questions later" policy for this kind of thing.

Although, this link (google result for "ps3 firmware bricks console") makes it sound like you might be up shit creek

That's a different firmware, unless he's been out of date for a while it shouldn't be the problem.

Well the new update is in relation to the jailbreak stuff that's going on. So maybe if you used the jailbreak code this is Sony's way of saying "Fuck you!"?

Believe it or not, someone recently managed to jailbreak the PS3. With a USB dongle, of all things. (insert joke about Sony removing USB support)

No, no. That's not insane at all.

Doing it with a freaking calculator? That is the insanity.

Yeah, I couldn't help but laugh at that.

That graphing calculator I used in high school math 10 years ago? It can jailbreak a PS3.

    Wow, that's nuts.

No jailbreaking, and I've been up to date with my firmware. It has been crashing strangely lately, like weird delay in games, it even reset itself once. And when I tried to power it off a few times, it would wait and give me the three beep error sound and crash/shut down. Could this all be power supply related?

It if was an Hdd problem I would think it would at least turn on... I'm going to call them today and see what's up, but it's an original 60gb so I really don't think they can help me...

Has anybody ever gone this route: http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-power-supply-20GB-40GB-ZSSR5391A/dp/B002WZ2N2Y

Probably a longshot but I'd give booting into safe mode a shot. From what I've read these are basically the steps a PS3 tech will run through with you anyway before being forced to send in for repair/replacement.

Edit: Anecdotal but I recently upgraded my HDD as well and the firmware updates have been less than user-friendly since. It took ~45mins and multiple reboots to upgrade to 3.42 this morning.

In my experience it's more a "blame the customer first and eventually ask questions." Persistence might be necessary to get through to somebody who has the ability and inclination to actually help you, but don't let one phone jocky saying something ridiculous like "the power cord your unit came with wasn't the official Sony cord and we can't help you" end things.

Just because it's a really old one doesn't mean they can't help you, but it does mean it may not be free.

@EvilMonkey, can't do Safe Mode since there is no power to the unit, no red light, nada. :(

Thanks for the advice, guys. I will update tomorrow after I buy myself a torx wrench and call up Sony. I'm really hoping it's the power supply and nothing more serious.

Just to get the really stupid things out of the way, have you tried plugging in the machine in a different outlet?

and they said it can be like 20 problems. Power supply, fuse on the motherboard, bad front touch power panel/ribbon cable, etc. I just express ordered the power supply, fingers crossed!

Yeah, and even tried a different power cable to make sure it wasn't something dumb like a $9 cable.
