Are there any pros or cons to drinking tons of milk? My roommate goes through like a gallon a day.

I hate you and you hate me.

Its good for you for the most part but I guess if he's sculling full cream milk he's taking in a lot of fat? If he isn't very active he might notice some weight gain.

Yeah he got pretty big for a while but then he switched from Vitamin D milk (which is apparently very high in fat) to 1%, and that seemed to help.

I just think it can't be good for you, but I have nothing to back it up. (P.S. He just bought two gallons of milk last night and polished them off a few minutes ago).

The website www.milksucks.com offers a lot of points against cosnuming high volumes of milk. I gues they're a bit biased though... Perhaps wikipedia has something more objective (can't search now; at work.)

Definitely looks like a biased source. Didn't go through it much, but almost every article jumped into ridiculousness by the end of the first paragraph.

    Anyway, as for wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milk#Controversy

I've heard of some of the things mentioned there, like the Crohn's disease link and high calcium intake in relation with prostate problems. The autism claim is pretty much the same bullfloppery as the same claims with vaccinations, it was pretty conclusively disproved before it even became popular. Wikipedia's neutrality goes too far sometimes I think.

One I don't see mentioned is the combination of calcium and protein. Supposedly (Not a doctor here, just playing the parrot) while calcium is good for preventing a lot of bone diseases, high protein can make them worse, and milk is full of both. I've seen claims going both ways on the balance between the two, but some research has suggested milk, especially in excess, can actually promote bone diseases rather than prevent them.

Most studies back when the controversy was big had bovine growth hormone itself being harmless to adults, but cows treated with it are more likely to develop infections that can carry into milk. There was just a recall in Michigan because of an outbreak of mastitis. From my understanding it's the infection problem that's lead to its use being banned in so many countries.

tl;dr: Way too much of anything good is usually bad in the long term. All of the problems and supposed problems end up having something to do with excess calcium, fat, or protein from drinking upwards of 5-6 glasses a day, over twice the recommended amount.

Milk has a surprisingly high amount of calories. I think 2% is something like 125 per 1 cup, which is almost the same as a can (12 ozs) of Coca-cola.

Is there anything inherently bad? No, not really. He might develop calcium deposits on his skin, and he *might* have a higher risk of kidney stones. Mostly he's consuming over 1200 calories (assuming skim milk) just drinking liquid.

Does he work out a lot? If not this guy sounds like an idiot, is he addicted to the milk? He might want to seek help for that, it sounds pretty serious. That is a lot of money on just milk, how much is a gallon where you are at? Its atleast $60 a month on just milk, which is insane.

I bet he takes monster dumps as well. If he's not lactose intolerant, i don't think there is anything life threatening with drinking that much milk. at least, not in an immediate sense. I know a lot of the people who work out a lot swear by drinking a lot of milk. I probably put away a gallon of skim every 4-5 days and i don't have any issues that i know of.

I drank a gallon of milk every couple days a few years back. Whole milk, never gained weight (was actually underweight), very sedimentary lifestyle. I dunno... I went back and forth between Orange Juice and Milk. Nothing else really sounded good.

40 pounds or so later, I've cut back a bit on the milk. Metabolism died recently.

Anyway, I drink a lot of milk (probably a gallon of 2% every 4-5 days, sometimes faster) and I'm not overweight. I didn't realize just how many calories were in a glass, though. Yeah, I was the same until I started counting calories a couple of months ago. It's pretty eye opening to see what is in some things. Other things will surprise you when you find out they're not quite as bad as you thought. But now I pretty much only put milk in my cereal in the morning, whereas I'd have several cups before bed before.

I used to drink this much milk too.

Except I was doing a hardcore bulk and lifting a shitload of weight with great frequency.

The biggest con would be.. drinking 50% - 100% of your daily calories in milk alone.

Okay. People need to stop trying to link milk and kidney stones together. It has more to do with your bodies inability to break up the crystals formed in your urine.

Most things you consume have cholesterol, but seriously you need a bit of that in your diet too. The 24mg per serving isn't going to up-end your friend, even more so that 1% has only 12mg.

Still, drinking that much liquid isn't the best of plans. Ask them to keep a tally of how often they pee and what their urine looks like; in the hopes that these two questions will prompt them to not drink so much or maybe see a doctor.

I've been drinking tons of milk since I was a kid. Early on in my childhood (think five or six years old) I switched over to skim milk because I enjoyed it so much. I'll invariably have a glass or three every day.

But a gallon?! Jesus. That might not be good for you.

I'm just wondering because I have a pretty strenuous job outdoors, and I drink probably 200oz a day...about 100 to 150 of that is water, and the rest is a combination of grape juice, orange juice, and soda.

Milk is definitely good for you - whether or not a gallon a day is good for you is a different story.

I drink a high quantity of milk a day (up to 2 litres), but a gallon is really pushing it.

If he's lifting and bulking he can get away with it for awhile (actually of all the bulk aides milk is probably one of the best), but he should probably consider cutting down a little bit if possible.

Also, he should have a blood test to ensure everything's ok as well - milk is a dense calorie liquid and as people have noted, unusually high consumption of any liquid (except during workouts) can be a signpost for a number of problems.

A glass of whole milk has about as much fat in it as an order of fries from McDonalds.

Milk is nice with certain meals but it's definitely something that should be drank in moderation.

Women need a lot of calcium to prevent bone density loss, and milk has calcium in it. Of course, milk isn't the only thing that has calcium in it. And your roommate is not a woman. But at any rate, that's one pro for milk.

Edit: And whole milk is fucking disgusting. I accidentally bought some once and thought it'd curdled or something. Skim all the way.

Whole milk definitely needs to be chilled properly, preferably drank out of a cold glass container, and the individual dairies can make a lot of difference. Some brands of milk just plain aren't any good.

I usually drink 2% because it's healthier, but whole milk isn't necessarily terrible, although it can definitely be a shock for people who aren't used to it. Once I went several months without touching whole milk and it almost made me gag.

I don't know a single person who drinks skim milk. I thought I was the only one. Like I said, been doing it since I was in kindergarten. Growing up every family I knew either had 2% or 1% because it was a moderation between health and taste. I personally love skim.

does the guy have a lot of mucus problems? What my anecdotal evidence suggests is that people that consume a lot of dairy (milk, cheese, etc) often have mucus problems (excessive stuffed/runny noses, head pressures similar to headaches but not quite the same, and other issues).

Just wondering if your friend has any of these symptoms.

Addressing some nonsense in the thead:

Milk does not cause mucous production.

While we don't need milk beyond childhood, it's a wonderful source of calcium, protein and various other goodies. In fact, humans have gone so far (in milk consuming regions) as to foster a genetic mutation that eliminates the "normal" lactase production shutdown after weaning and allows indefinite lactase production. If you are one of these lucky individuals, keep drinking milk. It's good for you.

That all said, if "like a gallon" is anything approaching a gallon, he should probably cut down unless he's attempting to become a competitive powerlifter. That's a lot of calories spent on a delicious beverage, even if it is disgusting skim milk.

1% Milk is considerably better then beer or soda as a foodstuff. However if it's the large majority of your calories, then the problem is not the fat content, it's that all the carbs in it is sugar (lactose).

high intake of milk over a long period of time is a potential disaster as far as gut health goes. You could give yourself leaky gut, and then develop things like gluten intolerance. So long term . . not a great idea to be doing gallon of milk a day.

and if you can get goat milk, it's a safer alternative from a gut health standpoint because goat milk has the same type of beta casein as human milk, whereas the cows most often used for milking have a type that doesnt do too well with the human body.
