Two of my friends just took off after PAX to go on a big two month tour of Europe, and are going to be in Iceland for the next six days. They mentioned that there hasn't been too much to do, so far. Does anyone here have any recommendations that I could pass along? They are on a pretty serious budget, but if it's worth doing they would check it out. Are any posters here from Iceland, too?
Seeing the geysers is pretty sweet if they haven't observed their ilk before, definitely worth a look. Same applies to driving out to a glacier and, depending on the glacier, possibly travelling upon it (although this may be hazardous without a guide?). Pretty nuts. There are also some totally decent waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss, Barnafoss & Hraunfoss, and Dettifoss, which is particularly cool because you can go right up to falls at the top and just touch the water if you felt so inclined (don't slip; you'll die.. Welcome to Iceland ), and it happens to be the largest waterfall in europe by flow volume :P There are some cool canyons in Þingvellir, which lies on the tectonic (?) divide between the european and american plates. If they're history buffs, visiting some of the old turf houses and churches can be pretty neat, although I can't dredge up any specific names at the moment. If they have maybe 2 days to spare, Þórsmörk is well worth a visit.
