Cranky Druid here with a third post on the topic of investigating unwieldy fantasy concepts. This one's called "Evil by the Numbers". Check 'em all out, or not, as you like. If you do glance at one or more, feel free to leave a comment there. Thanks.

Well-written, though at this stage I really hope most DMs here are aware bad guys aren't just bad guys in story terms. Of course, some tabletop games are aiming towards the video game experience - cf early DnD in general. Some people need what amount to walking integers to play with - they call them goblins.
But yes - other DMs, like me, want the violence to be seen as horrid and tragic even if it's necessary.
YMMV, basically. Some evil clerics have no backstory, because that's not fun.

i would like to point out that opting not to give each monster a name and a backstory is not some sort of inability or deficiency in intelligence, it's because kick-in-the-door is a perfectly valid and fun way to approach the game
and i thought we had finished with that whole tired discussion about video game-ization two years ago
I think it's always a valid point to make - it's just that that discussion DID have a conclusion, and that was that it was each group's own damn business what they did for kicks round the gaming table.

False. They are not living at all!
