I finally caved in and bought a PSP. I've been holding out for a long time, but the release of a new Kingdom Hearts game was enough to finally convince me to get the system. I snagged the Birth By Sleep bundle and that's the only game I currently own. However, I've got a list of stuff that I want and I know I will get.
But I'm not all that familiar with titles for the console outside of the ones that I know I want, so I'm just gonna ask if there are any "Must Own" PSP games that I need to pick up. I'm really only interested in A++ games. Stuff that every PSP owner should have.
Here is my list of stuff that I intend to buy:
God of War: Chains of Olympus
God of War: Ghost of Sparta
Metal Gear Solid: Peacewalker
Valkyeria Chronicles 2
Other than that I'm not really sure what else to get. Is Little Big Planet for PSP any good? I own the PS3 version already and I like it, but if the PSP one is almost identical, I can skip it easily. Also, how is Assassin's Creed Bloodlines?

Anyway the game I would say is 'must own' is Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, it very rarely leaves my PSP and is great fun if you can stick past the steep learning curve. Especially fun if you can find some friends to play with.
If you're into Final Fantasy then Dissidia is a fairly solid option, very heavy on the fanservice but a decent fighter at any rate. FF Tactics is also pretty neat. Oh and there are ports of some of the early FF games for the PSP too, but I have no idea as to their quality.
If you liked the KH games in PS2, Birth By Sleep is actually really damn good.
Can't really think of more "AAA" (hate that "classification") titles worth it. I could recommend a dozen other really awesome games, but they're quirkier stuff (hells yeah, Half Minute Hero).
The original lumines is good, and Disgaea is very at home on the portable systems
Persona 3 Portable
LocoRoco 1 and 2
KH:BBS?
As for must haves, I guess it'd help to know what types of games you're looking for. There are some excellent rhythm-type games for example, but I've got the coordination of a dead fish so I couldn't really recommend anything. The missus really liked Patapon though. For actiony games, I'd recommend the Syphon Filter series. Excellent third-person shooters. I still do matches with friends from time to time. Resistance: Retriubution was made by the same team, though I prefer the SF series myself. Ace Combat series doesn't suffer much in its portable version either.
And while I also say Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, I have to acknowledge that it doesn't click with everyone. It's pretty polarizing; either you don't like it, or it's going to be the only game in your drive for a very long time.
Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank. Just makesure you fix the controls.
Syphon Filter Dark Mirror and Syphon Filter Logans Shadow. Both are fantastic cover based third person shooters.
Killzone Liberation. Utterly awesome tactical, isometric shooter. The DLC will make you tear your hair out from the difficulty though.
But yeah, Monster Hunter is a whole franchise of games that is designed to kick you in the balls repeatedly and have you coming back for more. For a weaker game that may be more enjoyable for certain people, Phantasy Star Portable and its sequel are pretty good.
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep may be the absolute best in the Kingdom Hearts series in terms of gameplay and the ability to actually follow the story as it plays out, despite (or because of) the way it's split up into three (or more) stories, Rashamon-style.
Get one of the Lumines or Echochrome games for on-the-go puzzling. For Strategy RPGs, you've got Disgaea 1 and 2, Wild Arms XF (surprisingly good), Jeanne D'arc, and Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. All of the releases of Final Fantasy (including the old PS1 games like FF7) are excellent for the PSP. Persona 3 Portable is some of the most fun I've had on a traditional RPG in a while (must buy if you haven't played Persona 3 on PS2, and even if you have, you may want to revisit the game through the new storyline with a female protagonist).
Otherwise I reiterate what's already been said:
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Patapon 1 and 2
Persona 3 Portable
and add:
Phantasy Star Portable 2 (skip the first one)
I was going to ask why, then I saw your recommendations :P
There's awesome action titles. Peace Walker I'd put up above MGS 4.
SS: 0775 9129 1567 Black: 3267 4422 1986
Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip
Lunar Silver Star Harmony
Pinball Heroes
All Loco Roco games
I also like "Monsters (probably) stole my princess", Rocket Racing and Gravity Crash. Rock Band is fun, too!
Other than that, my favorite PSP games are probably Half-Minute Hero & Rockband Unplugged.
Lots of good RPG & Strategy/RPGs as well if you're interested in those. Oh and since you bought it for Kingdom Hearts, you'd probably like the Ys games.

Also the Ys 1&2 thing if it ever gets released over here.
Soul Caliber: Broken Destiny is also quite good, although it's only got adhoc multi.
So, FFT: War of the Lions.
I second this so much. It's a lot of fun.
Say you wake up from a coma, you're muscles are weak and can only support your body and 7 ounces as you pull yourself over the edge and into the safe cool water. You're going to want these games in your psp and ready to go.
Replay value and sheer bang for your buck are key here.
Pixeljunk Monsters
Pixeljunk
Super Stardust Portable
Super Stardust
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
Puzzle Quest
Apparently you can't read the forum because the PSP 5th birthday thread is on the first few pages and has plenty of games you could get! :P
Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and/or Unite
MGS: Peacewalker
Valkyria Chronicles 2
Patapon series (can't wait for Patapon 3)
Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
Lumines I and/or II (seriously, the PSP versions are still the best)
Disgaea 1 and/or 2 if you can find 'em
Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
Yeah, people frequently ignore the OP in recommendation threads.
LBP for the PSP has entirely different levels than the PS3 version so it's worth a look if you're a fan. There's a demo on the PSN for you to check out.
You want AAA+ games for the PSP? Here's a more indepth list (excluding your OP).
=Popular exclusives=
Wipeout Pulse
Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe
Half-Minute Hero
Crisis Core: FF7
Dissidia: Final Fantasy
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Ys 7
=Great Exclusive PSP series=
LocoRoco (2 is good, Midnight Carnival is difficult but good if you're up for the challenge)
Patapon (get 2 or wait for 3)
=Great remakes/collections=
Persona 3 Portable
Mega Man remake
Mega Man X remake
Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles
Gradius Collection
=Excellent Strategy/RPGs (since you mentioned Valkyria)=
FFT: The War of the Lions
Portable versions of Disgaea 1 & 2
Jeanne D'arc
Wild Arms XF (a lot of idiotic reviewers marked this down because it actually requires strategy)
Also, don't forget that the PSP makes a great portable PS1. Lots of quality PS1 games on the PSN like Grandia, FF7-10, Um Jammer Lammy, RE 2 & 3, etc.
EDIT: LBP PSP has 2 planes, not 1.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,
Hot Shots Golf 2
Wipeout Pulse (the more recent one; the launch title is Wipeout Pure)
FFT: War of the Lions
In addition to VC2, which you already mentioned, but I have to reiterate how great it is, plot and writing aside. I'd also recommend looking at other downloadable titles; I rather enjoy Everyday Shooter and Super Stardust Portable, and Echochrome/Echoshift are intriguing games if you like puzzlers.
Sorry, scanning it I didn't see Kingdom hearts or KH, didn't file it under birth by sleep
Another game I really enjoyed that never gets mentioned is Crush. It wasn't perfect, but it had a cool concept (crush 3d to 2d at will) and explored it thoroughly. If you can find it, it's usually pretty cheap.
I completely agree. I'd rent Monster Hunter first. I'm glad I got it from Gamefly because I sent that game back quickly.
