I really like how most modern music software automatically scans for music files and lets you search for them according to category, genre, etc., or even allow you to add other labels of your own. Picasa does this well for photos. Unfortunately, they only work for music and photos.
Is there anything similar for files in general? I've downloaded a lot of files over the years, and most either go into the default download folder of the browser I'm using, or into a several-gigabyte "files" directory filled with thousands of miscellaneous files, most of which have entirely unhelpful names like "setup.exe," "homework.doc," or "FM79f.jpg." I'd really like to have a program that will scan all these files, organize them by file type or other categories, and allow me to add labels or descriptions to help me find them later. Being able to execute them from within the program is a must, and it would be great if it also allowed me to rename the files or move them to different folders as well.
