After working out...

Is it common to have a little bit of a headache? I just worked out for the first time in like 15 weeks, and went swimming at the university pool. I tried to push myself pretty hard, but for not working out for so long, it was pretty pathetic, but I have a little bit of a headache afterward. Is this normal for anybody else?

I get lightheaded and see sparkles myself if I didn't eat or drink enough before a really hard bit of cardio. Not a headache, but I suppose it's similar enough. Drinking a lot of water and/or eating anything before you went?

It's possible that working out can induce a headache. It's happened to me, and it can be from lack of sleep or overexertion. But considering that it's happened to you once, I wouldn't call it "normal" yet or lose any sleep over it.

Oh yea, if you're not getting enough sleep or not drinking enough water both could cause those headaches.

You are probably not taking enough oxygen in while swimming. Or your goggles are sized for a 3 year old.

You worked out by swimming, or worked out and then went swimming?

Either way, sounds like you need to hydrate more. If you are working out you should be hydrating while working out and hydrating and refueling afterwards. I am also pretty sure the chlorine in pools will suck moisture out of you, so its important you are hydrated before swimming as well.

As a clarification I saw swimming for exercise. I will make sure that my goggles aren't too tight, and also make sure to hydrate better during the day. Thanks all!

this could also very well be part of it.

try working out more often, but not at full-on intensity. at least not yet.

taking off almost FOUR MONTHS of exercise does have a noticeable effect on the body: it gets used to the relative lack of exertion.

I noticed this part too. Kinda sucked (ok, really sucked) compared to where I used to be.

i had the same problem going into this summer. school got so busy that i stopped working out for around three months. then i noticed i was all out of shape for the summer. suuuuucked.

i hit the gym as often as i could for the past three months. the first few times, i didn't have headaches, but i definitely felt very very weak after each session. that went away after a couple of weeks.

I've gotten headaches/migraines after extremely strenous physical activity. I'm talking about nearly-passing-out-and-nearly-throwing-up physical activity.

In the future, just drink some water and try not to work out so hard.

    You are dehydrated.

It's also possible you have a mild allergy to the chemicals used to keep the pool clean.

I am willing to bet it's from lack of fluids.

Keep hydrated and you'll be fine :^:

I used to exercise a long time ago. Got headaches each and every time, bad ones, regardless of diet / hydration. Part of the reason I stopped and have become a blimp. Still, it seemed pretty normal.
