What Should I Do?

So, a friend of the friend is selling his 360 for $250, which is apparently trade-in value at EB, so if I decide I don't like it as much I can trade it in there.

My dilemma is this: Do I buy the 360 for $250, knowing that I won't have a warranty in case it bricks or whatever 360s do, or do I buy a PS2 for $130 new since I've never had one?

I want a 360, and $250 is an excellent price for a pro unit, but the lack of a warranty makes me worry. He bought it last fall if that matters with the odds of it breaking or not.

I also want a PS2 though. Not as much as a 360, but it would be half the price, and new.

I know the libraries of both systems, and there are plenty of titles I'd get for both.

So. What should I do? Is it worth taking my chances on a briefly used 360 without a warranty, or just go ahead and pickup a new psTwo?

Pick up the 360. I think you can still buy a warranty from MS even if it's a used unit, but I could be wrong. The thing's not going to get that cheap again for a while. PSTwos don't exactly have a wave-like pricepoint. It's pretty much set where it's at and only has down to go.

Unless you know someone that will buy a broken 360, I'd probably just go for the Playstation 2.

While from my experience I wouldn't expect the 360 to break, you're dropping a lot of money down on used hardware. Both the 360 and PS2 could possibly become worthless in freak accidents, but at least with the Playstation 2 you'd have some coverage.

What games on the 360 do you want?

    Gears of War
    Dead Rising
    Viva Pinata
    Rainbow Six: Vegas
    GR: AW
    SC: Double Agent
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance if I don't get it for Wii first.
    uh... Blue Dragon?

    whereas on the PS2:

    MGS3
    Okami
    Both Katamaris
    Shadow of the Collosus
and more, I'm sure. I guess I didn't know the PS2's library as much as I thought.
and I can't think of anything else right off the bat.

This is very true. The PS2 has so many great games in all genres there is literally something great for any type of gamer to enjoy.

If it were me I would go for the 360 now because you are getting about 100 off of it. Then later pick up a PS2 once you have some spare cash because it will still be 130 the next time you have some cash saved up.

The question is, if you haven't bought a PS2 up until now, why change your mind now?

If the 360's what you have your heart set on, get that.

The PS2's an amazing system, but it's not going anywhere. That's a good deal, and if you're confident in your friend's ability to take care of his stuff, go for it.
(Er, I should clarify: it's a system with amazing games)

I never got a PS2 because first, I had an Xbox, and then, I never had disposable income to spend on another game system, as I then got a DS and then a Wii.

My main worry is just that the 360 will break randomly no matter what condition it's in and I won't have a warranty and it's going to cost me the difference of a new one to get it fixed anyway.

Well if you like shooters that much, the 360 may not be a bad idea.

Marvel: UA sucks big on the Wii. The current gen versions are far better. Stay the fuck away from the Wii version, seriously. I beat the ps2 version and had a blast. I played the Wii one for six minutes and turned the console off in disgust.

I would pick up the 360 and go rent or borrow a ps2. All of the PS2 games you mentioned are single player and you will be done with probably fairly quickly. Most of the 360 games you mentioned have multiplayer and can be played for awhile over Live.

And a ton of people have PS2s they hardly use at all and probably wouldn't mind loaning you to go through some of those games. Hell they probably own half of those games and you wouldnt even have to rent them. Nobody is going to loan you a 360.

I think the general consensus is that a PS2's more likely to randomly up and break than a 360, but I could be wrong.

Going by that list though, 360 all the way. PS2's mostly an eclectic/action/music/RPG gamer's dream.

Again, my main concearn is, if I get the 360 and it breaks, I'm out $250 which could have been spent on a ton of other things. If I buy a PS2 and it breaks(and I heard the new models are way way way better than the old ones) then I'm not out anything because I'll have a warranty. I wouldn't be so worried about the 360, but I keep hearing about how inevitable breakage is, and I'm still kinda pissed at Microsoft for putting defective DVD lasers into some of the original Xboxes, one of which I have, which shat out after six months. They had a factory in mexico produce something like half of the launch drives for cheap.

What's the chance of a 360 dying, anyway, if anyone knows?

Go with your gut. You want the 360 more? Get the 360. You're saving $150 so even in the off chance that it did break and they didn't cover it under warranty, I'm sure you could pay less than the money you saved to get it fixed.

EDIT: People who are annoyed are substantially more vocal than people who are happy. I think the 360 durability issues aren't nearly as common as the Internet would have you believe.

At least the $50 is an option. You pay it, you get online multiplayer, free demos for almost every game that comes out, downloadable content...etc etc.

You also have the option to spend nothing extra, and get nothing extra.

You only have one of these options with the PS2.

Well, if it is any help I know 6 people with 360s, of which none have had any troubles so far. And when you say last fall, do you mean, fall 2006...or fall 2005? Assuming fall 2006, then almost everyone I know who has a 360 purchased it before then.

Though I only know 3 people who have had problems with their PS2s, and I know quite a few more people with PS2s than 360s. And they have had a lot more time to break.
