Vibram Five Fingers fit question (SOLVED and lockable)
I just got my first pair of Five Fingers (KSOs) and since I had to order them online, I didn't exactly get to try a couple sizes in the store. I measured my foot and chose the 42s, which were suggested by the Vibram site.
I totally dig how they feel, but the big toe pocket seems a bit more snug than I expected. My big toe touches the end of the shoe. The other toe pockets seem to have quite a bit of room.
I'm considering ordering a 43 and giving them a shot, but I'm worried that this will give me too much room in the other toe pockets. The only reason I'm hesitating is because I don't want to pay the extra shipping and handling for another order and a return, but I will if it might help.
Thoughts?

Why not ask the people in the store you went to about how they should fit?
Why not read the first sentence of his post?
Improvolone, I was in nearly the same boat as you when I bought mine. In my case the other 4 toes were great, but my big toe was a bit snug, as you said. They felt great, but I was worried that toe would be uncomfortable over time. When wearing them for half an hour left a red mark on my toe, that sealed the deal and I went a size up. Are you in a similar spot, where you can't quite straighten it? My big toe fits just about right, and my other toes are 1/4 inch or so off the ends - so a bit bigger than ideal, but it hasn't mattered a lick in coming up on a year now. I know it's hard to ship them off, but it is worth it if they don't fit. By the way, choose your "alternate color" preference carefully on the return form. They are having so much trouble keeping up with demand that there is a good chance you'll get your 2nd choice. (I ended up with grey/green after originally having monkey-feet-black).
Why not ask the people in the store you went to about how they should fit?
Because they're not sold in most stores and with some "reading" you would have noticed he ordered them online.
I agree that you should probably bump up to 43s and wear injinji's with them, while your toe should be pretty close to the end and the rest of your toes most likely won't reach the end, too tight could cause some problems.
Coincidentally I have a pair of 43 Bikilas sitting in my closet, unused. So if you happen to want Bikilas instead for any reason, let me know.

Jesus. Snappy much? I misread and thought he said that he HAD gotten to try a couple sizes in the store and then decided to order online.
My advice is still sound. Go someplace they sell them and ask for a fitting. See if how they're fitting on you is normal or not.

If I flex my foot at all, the big toe pushes against the end of the shoe. I've been reading on-line and I keep hearing that you want them to be snug, and that they will stretch a bit to fit your foot, and that you want them snug, etc. This is why I'm hesitant. Also, my foot measurement is more than a 1/4 inch difference from what they say is a 43, which seems significant. I'd also like to avoid the socks as I live in Satan's Asshole.
I may just bite the bullet, order the 43s and compare. Sigh, stupid awesome shoes.

Ah, mine was snug when relaxed, and I couldn't flex my foot (lift my toes up) without bending my big toe to make it shorter. So my situation may have been worse. I was also remembering the damn rock climbing school I attended which said "Oh no dude, you want them nice and snug, yeah, they're fine!" which led to a big toe that was sore for a week, and whose toenail turned black.
The next time I'm anywhere near a store, I'll do just that. :P
Are your Bikilas black/black? The only way I might be able to wear these at work is if they aren't a funky color.
Sadly they're not
As for not wanting to wear injinjis with them, you may rethink that. I wear them with my kso's and the kso's still don't smell too bad even though I've had them for over a year and a half. I don't wear them with my Bikilas and they smell soooo bad. I wash them once a week and the smell just goes away until the next time I wear them. Now, this may be because I run in them that I even have to deal with it at all, but that is something to think of if your feet are going to be sweating.

Red Raevyn, BEAST!, don't be dicks, really.
Esh, that's how you sound half the time, so take note.
ceres on
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn
Not sure where you got them, but a lot of online stores that sell Fivefingers allow for a generous period of return in order to make sure the size is right.
Now, as far as sizes are concerned, I recommend you compare your current size to the recommended European size on the Euro size chart (one is available here: http://www.purekit.com/vibram-fivefingers-classic-shoe-prod21016/). I have Morton's toe, so sizing FF is a huge pain, but I've had really good luck with the European size chart, myself.
With that said, the people on the BirthdayShoes forums always say that it's easier to stretch a pair of FF after wearing them for a while than shrink a pair that's a little too big.
If the big toe touches the end of the pocket but the rest of the pockets are a bit roomy, you'll probably find the next size up a little too large.

Apologies if this isn't the place, but a friend of mine has these toe shoe things and they're interesting, but I'm not sure I see why they're preferable over a basic tennis shoe?
I wore them out on the town today, so my feet were five finger bound for several hours. I did not have any of the redness Red was talking about, so I may really have the proper size. It won't take much breaking in/stretching for these things to fit really nice. I can't wait! Thanks everyone. Happy feet up in here.

Long story short, our bodies evolved over millions of years to run and walk before shoes, so why use a shoe that so dramatically changes the way our foot works like pretty much every shoe out there?
Oh my god, I ran for a bit today. That was so much fun.

yeah the wearing of five fingers is a lot like normal hiking boots- they really need to be Worn in before you do any serious hiking/excersizing in them.
Injinjis are so fucking expensive. Maybe I'll just cut the toes off of some dress socks and sew a seam around it.
I just go to a 100 yen store and pick up a pair of cheap toe socks. Haven't tried actually working out with a pair on, but they feel fine just walking around.

My apologies for piggybacking on this thread, but I also have Morton's toe, and it's rather pronounced (almost 1/4 of an inch). Could you please tell me a little more about how you decided on what fit you wanted, and how running in these has worked out for you? I'd really appreciate it.

I'd argue that the change isn't very dramatic. Plus, shoes add stability and cushion.

YMMV. I've experienced the change is very dramatic. I don't own a pair but I'd consider getting them for using my TRX, not for running because I hate running. It doesn't cost anything to find out, just find a patch of grass, take your shoes off, and run a bit. When I did it, I felt like I didn't want to stop.

that's the point..you don't need either of those things...
Worked a full day in them today, no major irritation and my fee didn't hurt a ton when I got home. Better yet, my supervisor liked them so I'm totally in the clear. Happy feet still all up in here.
Thats a wrap everyone, thanks!

This is the case
I was lucky to have a City Sports near me which sells them, and I bought one size, that i thought was good, but it was too big
I sized down so my big toe touches and the other toes have room and it is perfect
as long as your toe isn't like, being bent, then it is good
