So I'm trying to put together a playlist of a certain type of song, that is, one that may start off slow but builds into an epic crescendo of emotional awesome. It's much easier to give examples than actually try to describe what I'm talking about, that being said, probably the most recognizable example of the type of song I am looking for is "only in dreams" by weezer. Slightly more obscure examples include "the sweets" by the yeah yeah yeahs and "a grammarian stuck in a medical drama"(excellent example, not very well known) by world leader pretend. I hope that gives a good enough feeling for what I'm looking for, I know thats not exactly a comprehensive list, but that's sort of why I made this thread...I can't think of any more songs to fill out this playlist. Any suggestions?

Given that you mentioned the Weezer song you might want to give "Battlescars" by Ozma a try. It's not exactly the same, but it might give you what you're looking for. Either way, it's a kickass song.

Woah, that is a pretty cool song. I'm always a touch skeptical with Itunes 30 second previews for songs that are over 6 minutes long, but you're right. This is a pretty kickass song.

Glad you liked it. Ozma are a pretty rad band overall. I'll try and go 2 for 2 here since no one else seems to really have any suggestions -- try "Constellation" by the Juliana Theory. It's another 6 minute song, but it seems all songs of this type are. TJT can be a little...on the whiny side, but that's the one song if theirs I dig.
I can give you a shit-ton of these, man. This is the kind of music that I LIVE for.
A lot of these you may not have heard of, but track them down, they're worth it for their crescendoes. For liking Weezer, specifically that song, you have my eternal love.
My quintessential crescendo track is absolutely 'Black Dollar Bills' by Hope of the States. Approximately the last four minutes of the seven-minute song is one crescendo that builds and builds.
Other noteables include:
Bonebox - St. Jay's Infirmary
Elton John - Funeral for a Friend (Love Lies Bleeding)
Fony - Wishlist, End
Anything by Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The entirety of 'A Sky Of Honey' by Kate Bush.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Oh My Lord
Nine Inch Nails - La Mer
Oasis - The Cage
Pink Floyd - Careful With That Axe, Eugene
Explosions in the Sky - A Poor Man's Memory
The Two Towers OST - Ride of the Rohirrim
I want to say Explosions in the Sky - Your Hand in Mine also, but I can't find it right now to listen to, so I'm not 100% sure it fits what you're looking for.
Yes, yes, and more yes. I didn't mention them only because it's not usually something you put on a playlist per se, but they absolutely must be listened to.
Also thought of a couple more you might want to check out:
Spiritualized - I Didn't Mean to Hurt You
Team Sleep - Live From the Stage
beautiful, those are all exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for. Thanks so very much guys, these are perfect. Just wanted to add that yes, Godspeed is incredible, love them.
Absolutely addicted to this type of music.

Stairway?
They certainly build up a bit.

I can't think of a better example, seriously.
EDIT: Knights of Cydonia by Muse has a fucking awesome climax but the song is still pretty full on up to that point so I guess not.
