I still haven't brought the DLC, and I really can't afford double dipping for the Steam version. The news is still worthy of celebration though. Sega's PC track record has been solid so far.

Christmas, it has come early.
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Fans of the cult classic Valkyria Chronicles were tittilated earlier this week with the announcement of the game’s migration to PC. (As someone who plays games 95% of the time on PC, I was one of the many.)
As mentioned earlier today, the game will support 1080p and 60 FPS. In either case, now that the release date has been officially announced, a few digital retailers have tossed the game up on their store shelves.
The best available deal is currently at GMG for the Steam key of the game at only $14.04. Just use coupon SLICKD-EALS22-OFFGMG and you’ll get a healthy combined 30% off (10% instant savings + 22% coupon).
The coupon expires tomorrow as far as we know, but we’re fairly confident there will be another equivalent offer in the near future before the title is fully released. This deal should also work globally, although you’ll see your respective region’s pricing for the title.

I wonder if they'll make balance changes or leave as is.
I assume not, lest they be accused of "tampering with a classic." It'd be nice to have Scout brought down from "can do everything better than anyone" level, though.
I'm torn, I have the PS3 version and I've played it a bit but I don't think I'm too deep into it and I'm tempted to re-buy it for the increased resolution/FPS. It's my same conundrum for GTAV though this one is a bit easier because it's much cheaper.

If it is any consolation I probably put in a bijillion hours in to the PS3 version and plan on buying the PC version, maybe a couple of times in fact!

I hope they don't botch the controls, or take the lazy way out and just slap basic gamepad support. This game is tailor made for PC controls, and they're all obvious. Mouse cursor control for all menus. Cursor controls for units on the map. Standard WASD FPS controls on the ground.

I'm fully prepared for disappointment in this regard. But since it's Valkyria Chronicles, I'll take it anyway.
I never actually beat Valkyria Chronicles, but I loved the game. The last few missions are just...I'm not sure what the word is. Bullshit? When there are scripted events that cause basically invincible guys to pop out and 1shot your strongest and/or plot characters, forcing a reload, I kinda lost patience. But flamethrowering a bunker full of dickbags with Rose? Radical.
My biggest hope -- That this sells very well on the PC/Steam market, and they follow up by releasing VC2 on Steam, and ultimately VC3, which has never been localized for the west.

I can see this turning out like the PS3, getting fully into VC1 only to get completely turned off by 2. If Sega is smart, they'll skip 2 and just localize VC3 and upscale. 2 was not meant for Western audiences and it REALLY shows, not sure you want to burn your new fanbase twice in a row.

The PC is a much stronger platform for turn based strategy outside of Japan. VC's PC port won't have the hype train that XCOM did but it could do very well over time especially if it ends up on the Christmas Steam sale.

It really depends on what it costs them to port to PC. There is a market for very non-Western games on the PC. Recettear did pretty well compared to the much more traditional games Carpe Fulgur translated and put on Steam from what I understand. With 3 the big thing is that they need to do a translation too.

My point is VC1's Eastern roots is muffled, it has a lot of Western game sensibilities. If someone plays that and enjoys it, then plays 2... which wears its Eastern roots like a pair of clown shoes, it'll turn them off the series as a whole before the better game in 3 is released.
There is zero chance that 2 or 3 will show up on PC. Sega knows people won't buy 2 and they're not going to skip to 3.
So why port the first and get hopes up? Because Sega. This is what they do.
Your best outcome is Sega realizing that both 2 and 3 sold terribly, cutting their losses and acting like 2 and 3 don't exist anymore. Then if they wish to continue the series on PC, they give it to Creative Assembly, who really are their PC Dev team and strategy team, and possibly let them do wonderful things with the IP.

The best outcome is for Sega to realize VC fans really like VC, and wanted more of the same, but less of the horribly written high school stuff. They would then cut their losses and pride on VC2 and skip directly to VC3.
I feel bad about not supporting the VC franchise even through I could've bought VC2, but I don't think I could stand the story going any more anime than it already did in the first. VC3 sounded like the sequel I wanted.

The best outcome would be Sega seeing the sales on PC, and using the money to fund a spinoff game titled Wings over Gallia, focused on a squadron of pilots flying late WW1/early WW2-derived aircraft, with each pilot's assigned plane being customisable in model, armour, armament, etc, ala Crimson Skies. Basically Crimson Skies in the VC universe, plus story cutscenes, plus the VC aesthetic.

Stop laughing. A man can dream.
I will counter that anyone's best outcome would be made better if it also included Sega deciding to see what would happen if they ported Shining Force 3 to PC.
And then found a backup of the source code for Panzer Dragoon Saga/RPG and ported that to PC.
Their Saturn and Dreamcast days were full of games that either fit into resurgent genres on PC or would mix well with the offbeat games usually made by independent developers today.
You know the gameplay in VC2 is still pretty solid. I think it's a good game, though indeed the setting, characters and Avan's laugh are occasionally suicide-inducing.

for those getting Valkyria on PC, cheapest I've found it is 14.99 on getgamesgo.

The game did some good things, like improving class balance and diversity, and letting you do crazy shit with your tank, but the progression system is fucking horrible, the segmented maps and puny deployment limit kill any sense of scale, and the graphics downgrade ruined the awesome visual style the first game had. It is in no way a worthy successor to VC1.
It's a decent game, but yeah there are some bad calls. I also didn't care for the tiny, segmented maps, that was also set up in such a way as to make you do multiple missions on the same map. And I sort of remember the unlock system, which was terrifying. You needed item drops to change classes that dropped after missions, and they weren't guaranteed, so happy grinding. And if I'm remembering right, each class had a hidden potential you could unlock that could be freely assigned. But you had to actually trigger it to unlock, and naturally they wouldn't tell you what it was. Not to mention if it was a shitty trigger to begin with (have fun if it's Dud mine). If you were a completionist who wanted to unlock everything, the game was an utter grind.
Good game, I didn't really hate it, but I also lost interest and never finished it. I might be tempted to do so in the future, and do it on the big screen with a proper controller thanks to the PS TV.

I bought a PS3 pretty much for this game, the first two Uncharted games, and Little Big Planet (and future games, of course). Valkyria Chronicles was easily my favorite of the bunch.

The longer we go without a revival of this franchise the more I begin to think the best way to revive it is to go the persona/final Fantasy route focusing on the Valkyrians throughout time space and different dimensions.

CANVAS is going to look gorgeous in 1080p, and 60 FPS is a nice surprise. Sounds like they're doing quite a competent port.

Speaking of which, do the "Blue Flame" DLC ASAP if you get this. The gun it gives you for A-ranking the last mission is hilarious.

Lowest price that I know of is $13.86 through greenmangaming with 23% voucher code BWG00E-QJP45O-INFGR1 or GET23O-FFSLIC-KDEALS, both expire 11/3.
So I'm very happy this is coming to PC. Hope they don't botch the controls.
VC2+3 abandoning the platform was... displeasing.
