    That game isn't Final Fantasy.

So, who here besides me actually played Radical Dreamers?
    [tiny]If you haven't, why not.[/tiny]

You know... back when Serge was a talkative, somewhat-perverted, spoony bard.
And Kid had actual character development.
And before Magus got written out of the story and before his promise to find his sister at the end of CT became worthless.

    What happened?

I actually liked Chrono Cross a lot. Not having played Chrono Trigger probably helped in not having any real expectations other than 'hey it's from some of the same guys as Final Fantasy'. I really have the replay this game some time soon.

That same site someone just linked too also has a write-up about Final Fantasy XIII. Reading it, I can't help but feel that this what the actual reviews should have been like. Looks great, zero substance. The game almost plays itself. Ever since VII I'd like to consider myself a big FF fan...but after 5 hours of FFXIII I just gave up.

On another, but completely thread related note, I've finally picked up Crisis Core. Not sure what the fan opinion on this game is, but I'm finding it rather meh just a few hours in. (though at least better than XIII)

I liked the parts that dealt with FF VII directly - Zack's time in SOLDIER, how he met Aerith, his early interactions with Sephiroth, etc. Unfortunately, a lot of the game deals with Angeal and Genesis, which sucks. The gameplay is pretty average. I didn't like it enough to grind and abuse the materia fusion system.

I never thought of Chrono Cross as a dark game, but looking at that write-up... yeah, it's downright depressing.

Uh, it's tangentially related since it was made by Square's dream team?

CC is a very dark game.

The split world scenario is based off of the brutal drowning of the main character by outside forces.

I loved CC growing up but trying to play the game again recently was a little too "What the fuck am I reading?" for my tastes. I still think it has one of the greatest jrpg OSTs of all time, however.

The problem is that CC's plot is waaay to complicated for its own good. It's badly structured, doesn't adress important plotpoints proberly. and, and, and

It's such a shame too, considering that CT is the PRIME example of a well structered plot in gaming.

Cart before the horse, I get ya

I really think step one should've been trimming a lot of the fat and focusing on a tighter cast. You had like a hundred million playable characters but at the end of the day did you really give two shits about -any- of them outside of maybe 3 or 4?

It's sad because it was there. you could taste greatness on the tip of your tongue and the ingredients were there for one of the greatest jrpgs of all time.

It also probably has to do with the fact that the last entire third of the game got cut and replaced with straight exposition-then-endboss, as Squaresoft wouldn't give their development team enough time to actually finish the game.

It's the same story as Xenogears. Shifting funding and deadlines.

Yeah I'm not finding the combat particularly interesting. It's kind of stuck halfway between being an rpg and an action rpg, since moving doesn't seem to matter that much (that I've seen). You only need to spam the regular attack - on the normal difficulty at least.

Still, I am looking forward to the bits related more to FFVII, and if anything Crisis Core is making me want to replay that again.

I've gotta say I really disagree with that socksmakepeoplesexy guy about FFX's dub being irredeemably game breaking garbage, but otherwise that write up is pretty spot on. Then again, I am pathetically apologetic for dubs, so yeah.
His Chrono Trigger writeup is perfect, though.

Yuna was awful, though, even if the rest ranged from 'eh' to 'decent'.

Also his FFXIII writeup is brutally accurate.

She's more of an "eh" in my book. Not great, but I could take it.

I have no love for XIII. Versus looks alright, though. That aspect of Squaresoft (Kingdom Hearts TWEWY) is the much better one these days.

Yuna's acting was "eh" at worst in Final Fantasy X, and that was pretty obviously the fault of the voice director.

Found your problem. If you played on hard you'd actually have to use your dodges and blocks and abilities and might actually be having a decent time.

On normal, all you have to do is attack.

game still holds up remarkably well, though

i'm surprised that something so tight and lean got released during the height of the "more is more" JRPG philosophy

I still don't fully understand CC's story. And I'm still a little annoyed at how they basically obliterated the original cast instead of just letting them have their happy ending.
