HP Laptop - Recovery Drive is a mess, help?

So for a while now this Low Disk Space warning has been popping up, and apparently my HP_RECOVERY (D:) is all but full. The only theory I've got as to how this happened is when transferring files from my shoddy external hard-drive onto my laptop, I must've clicked the wrong option in the drop down menu as to where those files should go.
Problem is I can't access this recovery drive so I can't delete these files. I don't know jack about computers so this problem perplexes me, and I was hoping someone could help me figure this out.
