My Philosophy of Science teacher told me that my (twice as long as assigned) essay was outstanding and that the first draft is worthy of an A+.

However he posed a challenge to my thesis and I must defeat it.

So, Archer is pretty much the greatest show to watch while you're wasted. I literally cried from laughing at it and I'm not entirely sure why.

    Alternately: don't do a Ph D.

You probably won't get to nail the other hot Ph. D candidate in your group, because you're not nearly as awesome as I am and thus it will just be soul destroying and let's face it, the crazy chick is just crazy.

High five "sleeping with the hot girl in your group" buddy. I just wish the rest of the PhD was as successful.

    Wait, really?

Up. Top. You and me are totally getting trashed together as soon as I con my supervisor into sending me to England because apparently international travel is something university's love.
    .
Yeah, it's how I met French Girl, she was working in my group.

I think, presuming it is ever created, I am going to work that into my thesis's acknowledgments section somehow - "a Ph. D is a great way to meet chicks, and little else...".

Actually if I have the cajones (I don't), that would be the entire acknowledgements section.

Yes, Pony, that is a problem. But I don't think that's most of most safespaces. Of course, that the only safe spaces I've visited tended to be pretty good is a possibility, but so far I haven't seen too many that had more of what you describe than what they were designed for.

In other words, I don't see a lot of people complaining about someone triggering them by saving them, but do see a lot of people being able to discuss assaults without being asked "Well, why'd you let him drive you home?"

And people really do need a space to talk without questions like that.

I've encountered very few feminist communities online (read: none) that are actually open discussion communities willing to engage outside opinions or address concerns raised.

"Safe space" gets used as the rebuke to push people away from doing so. You might not run into it, but I do.

    Welcome to the internet?

I think if you encountered more feminists in the real world, you'd find them much nicer.

I think I encounter about as many feminists as a man who doesn't take women's studies reasonably could encounter. Some of my best friends are not only feminists but women's studies majors, and I hang out with them and I even sometimes spend time around them in their own "element" with their feminist friends.

I'm about as knowledgeable on the subject as a person who doesn't study it academically could be expected to be.

    mostly syrup

sugar cubes are kind of a pain to mess with. they take a while to dissolve and you end up with a super-sugarly last sip.

Also: sugar cubes are the best thing, and more things should come in cube form.

These wiki etiquette articles are really interesting.

    Japan:
"It is a faux pas to accept a gift when it is first offered and the giver is expected to offer it multiple times (usually 3 times). Gifts are generally not opened in the giver's presence."

Alright Japan, you've got to be kidding me.
That is just Asia in general. China:

    * It is in the Chinese culture to refuse a gift, sometimes repeatedly. It is expected, however, that the giver will persist and the recipient's acceptance will eventually follow.

My adapter caught on fire a couple of years back and I took it to the apple store to replace it. They told me it was "user damage" and that I'd have to pay full price. I went home and called. I told the girl it had caught on fire and she said "are you okay?" I said yes and she said "Is it still on fire?" Then she laughed and told me she had to ask.

Five days later I got a new one in the mail no questions asked.

    Is that really uncommon?

I was never directly taught to not accept a gift on the first offering, but observing people growing up that's pretty much always the case.

    "Here, have this [thing!]"

"Oh, no, it's really too much"

    "Take it!"

    "Oh, gosh, you shouldn't have"

Macs actually do have a function that automatically puts it into sleep or shuts it down if the temperature gets too hot. Oddly enough, though, the "acceptable" temperature is so high it doesn't usually kick in until it breaks. My old one started randomly going into sleep mode because the overheat function was overreacting.

man so i am reading up on cocktails now

i guess people would have to drink a lot of these?

a lot of them only include about 1.5oz of actual alcohol- a couple dashes of this or that (bitters, for example) is only what, a 20th of an ounce?

i guess a manhattan is almost 2.5 oz of total alcohol

i am a dude with a probably not-great tolerance, drinking rarely as i do, but it still takes probably half a dozen shots to get me really feeling it
