So I think my Hotmail account was hacked.

Yeah. So despite using Firefox with NoScript/AdBlock, being wary of all downloads and dodgy looking sites, it seems like my Hotmail account, along with things tied to it like my Xbox Live, Battle.net and Facebook accounts have had their passwords changed.

This had to happen at a bad time, since my Xbox profile was recovered onto a friend's Xbox for the day at around 2pm on Saturday and now I can't get it back onto mine as of noonish on Sunday. According to Facebook, my password was changed at 11:30pm on the Saturday, and I sure as hell didn't change it. My Hotmail password was also set to autocomplete so there's no chance I'm misremembering it.

I tried using the password change/reset options but my secret answer was incorrect, and I'm damn sure it isn't, and then I was locked out of everything because I entered it too many times. Tried again this morning, and now using the change/reset links leads to a blank screen with "Server is Down" for fuck's sake.

What steps do I take to get it back, it's either A) a server problem, which I doubt since the Facebook password was changed, or B) it's hacked, in which case, is there anything I can do to recover my Xbox Live account, or anything?

Thanks.

I'd reformat just incase you have some kind of keylogger, that way you dont give them the new PW as soon as you get controll back.

    Oooh, you're living my nightmare!

Have you entered any CC or other banking info on your computer? Deal with that right away if you have. Next, it seems hotmail does have procedures for recovering an account even when the super secret question fails. ---> http://windowslivehelp.com/solution.aspx?solutionid=6ea0c7b3-1473-4176-b03f-145b951dcb41

Don't do this on your computer or any other computer you have accessed your hotmail on in the past though, until you have made sure they are clean.

After you have hopefully recovered your account, make SURE the hackers haven't added their e-mail address as alternate e-mail (or whatever it's called) since then they will be able to just reset your password and steal it again if they want.

After your computer is cleaned and your hotmail is recovered change passwords on everything!

Yeah, I filled out the questionaire to the best of my knowlege, only to get a reply that I 'have not passed our validation criteria'. :x

Do you know of anything else I can put that confirm my identity? I have no idea.

And yeah, I'm running various antiviruses, and I'm probably going to reformat anyway.

I don't know what they are asking in the questionnaire, but things I can think of are the year you made the e-mail account or perhaps they can compare IP adresses, or something.

Isn't hotmail owned by Microsoft? Include approximate dates for any Microsoft product you purchased or registered, particularly XBox live stuff since that would be tied to you hotmail account. Oh, have you bought or registered any game on your current XBox console? Each console has it's on registration number that stuff you buy are tied to. So if you have the console in question in your possession, that should count for something. Even better if you have bought or registered something with your name AND address then you could offer to fax them an image of you drivers license (cover your social security number). Or if you used a credit card with yours or a family member, that you live with, name on it.

I guess it depends on how much effort they are willing to put into helping a free hotmail account owner. If you have a gold membership with XBox live, perhaps try calling their support and see if they are willing to help a subscriber and all that.
