The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So it's been about 6 years since I've bought a computer or paid attention to new technology.
I just want a guideline of some specs to look for.
I'd use the machine primarily for WoW, and possible other MMO's in the future, and I prefer to always have my games on the highest settings (I like pretty)
I'd probably like a laptop, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker to have to get a desktop to get the performance I want.
The kicker is I'd like to keep it around $1000 CDN, I've started looking around at newegg, but without knowing what I'm looking for all I'm doing is looking at pretty pictures and getting confused.
You can deduct my nerd points as you see fit for not keeping up.
Erai - Operative <--Imperial Double Agent--> Sniper - Eari
SW:Tor - Tao - Kryatt Dragon Server
That's easy enough, WOW isn't going to require the highest performance.
The most simplistic way I can break it down is the higher the number, the better.
You're probably looking at about 2 - 4 gig (at least) of RAM, which is going to determine how much your machine can handle doing at any given time.
Most of the laptops around $950 on newegg meet that.
I would suggest a desktop over a laptop. The reason being is that if ever you find your laptop is not able to meet your gaming requirements, you're stuck with very limited options, usually resulting in dealing with it, or replacing the machine. A desktop is easily modifiable, so if ever you want more of something, it can be added.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227258 <-- this is cheaper than some of the laptops, and is going to perform better. The price on it will leave you room for the extended warranty (always get the warranty) and give you more gaming power than you'll be able to shake crysis at.
Maybe you can find it cheaper elsewhere, but if you don't need a new monitor it would have been a great computer for the price.
That thing in the link is actually a pretty powerful computer. With that being said you don't need a machine like that for current video games. That thing git 8 GB of Ram DDR3, and 1 TG of harddrive space, with an pretty top of the line video card.
Civ5 came out today and it requires only 2G of Ram, 1.8hz Duel processor, and nVidia 7900 GS.
On the other hand I dream of having that machine for gaming purposes. You won't need to upgrade your computer for another 4 years at least.

edit: You won't like Labtops for gaming.
