Hoping I can bum some inspiration and tweak my plans based on some input here...
I want to set up a city infiltration event, but I want to have an elaborate plot where the different members of the party have to rely on each other in order to succeed. In other words, I'll do it in "rounds" more or less, but they'll be in multiple locations.
So... are split-parties ALWAYS a bad idea? What I've tried to do (described below) is ensure that the split parties are all doing about the same thing... so if it's Roleplaying, they're all roleplaying or using their skills, and when one group is in combat, all are in combat at the same time, just in different parts of the city.
Background: PCs come to city they've been to before. They know there's corruption in certain government elements, and they've been working against that. They left to deal with some of the troublemakers at a base well outside the city, and I've delayed their return.
They arrive to find that word got out, and the main bad guy in the city has staged a coup. He has the Minister in charge of the city hostage, and has shut all the gates in and out of the city, with very hostile guards posted at the gates.
The PCs have some allies: the former Captain of the Guard with some loyal guards, and some religious good guy soldier-types that figure into the plot down the road (so I need them introduced and interacting with the PCs here and now).
Here's my current plan, which I'm hoping to get feedback or better ideas on:
1. NPCs stage distraction at main gate, drawing attention.
1a. Rogue PC/one of the NPCs sneak in or bluff their way in through east gate by blending in with a routine delivery that comes to that gate. They go to the back door of the main building and eliminate guards.
1b. Pally PC/Cleric PC/Sorceror PC/couple NPCs sneak in through sewers and eliminate a couple guards.
1c. Ranger PC/Wizard PC/Warlock NPC drop Silence over the guards at a side gate and eliminate them.
2a. Rogue opens back door of main building and sends a signal to the Pally's group
2b. Pally and company get in place within the city, and wait for their signal from the rogue
2c. Allies inside the city open the side gate from within to allow Ranger's small team in.
3a. Rogue meets up with Ranger party, infiltrates main building, rescues Minister while...
3b. Pally and co. create diversion outside the building.
4a. Rogue and Ranger and co. sneak the Minister out (maybe get in a fight on the way), and
4b. Pally and co. fight their way back to the sewer to escape.
What am I not considering? Well, other than how easily players drop bombs on the railroad tracks and send my whole storyline careening off a cliff...
