NEW FRONT MISSION fans cry tears of rage/joy

front_mission_evolved.jpg

Giant Robots need love too.

Front-Mission-Evolved-01.jpg
Front Mission Evolved is a Third Person Mecha Shooter by Double Helix and published by Square Enix.

Official Site
Releasing on Tuesday, September 28th in the US and October 8th for erryone else. Available on PC (Steam), Xbox360, and PS3. Single Player Campaign and some sort of Multiplayer Deathmatch Mode. Buy it before tuesday and get some free Wanzers.

Wanzers? The Front Mission games focus on battles with Wanzers (german Wanderpanzer = Walking tank) a mere 15-20 foot tall mecha keeping them slightly more probable then your average Gundam.

Not really surprised this game has no thread. Giant Robots as a genre is super niche. A strategy game rebooted as a 3rd person shooter leaves fans of the series a bit cold. There have been very few reviews of the demo version from assorted game shows and I can find none for the finished product.

So is the game going to be good? Honestly, I have no idea. Game play videos look alright? Wanzer destruction looks bad. Outside of wanzer on foot fighting looks meh. Not getting a good sense of scale in the Enviroments. I have read the storyline is short as well. But, Hey! Multiplayer! Up to 4 vs 4! That could be fun. Most importantly wanzer customization in your garage looks as deep as ever, so giant robot dress up is a go. Everyone loves big guns right?
GAU-8_And_VW_Beetle.jpg
big guns are rad.
Buy this game because you believe in giant robots and giant guns.

So yeah, Front Mission Series, Front Mission new game: Discuss.

I'm very sad that this is not a strategy game. And I'm torn. This video reminds me of Armored Core in a good way. The other videos.. not so promising.

Yeah, I'm very unhappy to see this return as a 3rd-person (3rd-robot?) mech shooter. I didn't even know another one of these was getting made, saw a random video of it last week, got all super-pumped... and then found out it isn't a strategy game. If they wanted another proper Armored Core or Chromehounds, then they just should've made one of those. I don't even remember the story out of the last couple Front Mission games I've played, but I do remember loving the hell out of preparing my unit for battle and winning a one-sided fight through superior tactics. Liking it a lot more than the last few Armored Core games, in fact.

The really sad thing is that the fiction surrounding the Front Mission stuff could make for some incredible stories, but the games always seem to be jammed with the worst kind of hammy, awkward writing. Further development of the strategic combat system coupled with a high-end story could make for something magical.

It hurt spending 44 dollars for it on Steam, but I feel I must support it. Gotta keep my spotless record (FM3, FM4, and FM First DS all on release day) Gotta speak with my dollars for Giant Robots everywhere. I Just hope I don't regret regret it, I can handle a small amount of remorse.

Anticipating a horrid cliche single player storyline (same writer/scenario developer as FFXIII, Motomu Toriyama), and a decent multiplayer. 4 modes, something like: King of the Hill, Free for all, Team Deathmatch, and some sort of Domination.

I know I am probably only going to play this game till Fallout: NV come out unless I can find people to play the online modes with. (assuming controls are good, customization is deep and varied, and all the 12 year olds are playing Halo)

All the videos I've seen make the gameplay look dull dull dull

They keep talking about intensity and action but it just looks like a slower, lamer Armored Core

I'd love a giant robot game that was slower paced but still intense, like that new MechWarrior game, or Chromehounds or something, rather than super fast and over the top like AC, but this game looks just as arcadey and nowhere near as involving

Gun Hazard called, it said for the two of you to go get stuffed.

Unfortunetily, from what I've read it sounds like this is a pretty shoddy tie-in that SE's only involved in for writing and the like. Terrible weapon balance, regenerating health, on-foot sequences in which you have to fight other Wanzers - yeah, I think I'll pass. It's a real pity, too, since FM always managed to stride the fine line between slow-ass lumbering death machines and crack-fueled schizo-twitch humanoid jets and give you a bit of both without too many extremes.

The good news, I also succumbed to the stupidity and pre-ordered it on steam.

The bad news, yeah its more than likely gonna suck.

One side-scrolling spin-off in a TBS series does not make a pattern. And, so far, this looks terrible.

Why won't anyone make a big ol' robot game where you're in the cockpit

Like Steel Battalion, except cheaper and more forgiving

I knew as soon as this was announced on the PC as well as consoles, that it was heading in a bad direction. So sad at how this game developed into a general Armored Core clone. Hope this doesn't flop too bad. I want another strategy FM..

I was a little late to the Front Mission party, getting started on Front Mission 4 back in the day. That said, I'm all for any new giant robot game.

More than anything this makes me want a sequel to Chromehounds...

Anyone still play that these days?

I see this thread, get excited, thinking about the times I played 3 & 4 and how great it was when you got the chance to get the bonus to get your knuckles and shotgun to attack twice during your turn and launching the grenade launcher on a block of wanzers, and then I see it's not strategy.

As far as I know Texas Supernova, there is no way to play Chromehounds online now.

And Olivaw, there is a cockpit pov cam in FM Evolved, read it was odd though. AND AUGH! I knew about regenerating health, but wtf Bullet-time? ACTIVATE YOUR WANZER'S EDGE SYSTEM!

The more I learn the more /sadfaced I get. Oh well, I will know how erroneous my decision was in 30 odd hours.

As far as FM3 storyline awesomeness, hell yes, it was awesome. Branching storyline, believable cliche characters, hard fights against ridiculous odds, and salvageable Wanzers. Amazing game. One of the reasons I still have a PS2.

I have been playing FM5 for a few weeks now off and on and it is far a better game then 4 was, with this amazing addition to the Battle Simulator called Survival Mode. It is essentially a mini roguelike inside the simulator with 100 floors to climb. You start as a level 1 pilot with level 1 skills and an ok wanzer and upgrade from pickups and level up your pilot, it is very addictive. Plus you can bring a limited amount of gear back out into the game proper with you.

I am still sad they never released a patch to give your single player mode all the weapons from online.

I know the singleplayer was basically a tutorial, but I would probably still toss it in from time to time.

I got this today for PC.

I can't figure out how to turn voice chat off in the game.

Also there aren't enough people online to do multiplayer yet. Kind of a bummer, plus I don't have time tonight to get into the single player.

PS, I also disliked FM4, but FM3 was the fucking shit.

Edit: Also, the physical PC copies have steamworks, so if that's an incentive for you like it is for me, it's fucking radical. Best of both worlds.

The matchmaking system is terrible, it gets confused easily and stops the countdown and freezes up all the time.

But I finally got into a match, and it was glorious. Really simple gameplay, but super pretty, and the mechs actually feel like mechs. Everything has the proper feel, which is all I wanted. Nothing ground breaking, but fun when it works.

Still, don't take my word for it since I've only played one match. Just first impressions.

I think people are really going to be torn on this one. There's pretty much an even split between what it does right and wrong.

Still, I dig it. The mechs have weight, the combat is frenetic and furious (and unbalanced). Missile spam all over.

    Good times.
