WTF is up with this stupid rockstar social club shit? I was told up through install that I'd need to log into that shit if I wanted to play online or do achivements. Now, in starting the game I just got a pop up that said I'd need to be logged in to save my progress.
Do I need to do that stupid rockstar social shit if all I'm going to do is single player through the campaign?

Yeah, you can hit "play offline" with RGSC, but you don't get multiplayer (I think) or uploading of replays (who cares). You have to be logged into Games for Windows Live to even save your single-player progress. You can make an offline account, which is pretty painless, but then if you create an online one later in order to check out the multiplayer, you'll probably lose your savegames.
I thought one of the latest patches actually set it so you no longer needed to be logged in to the social club for multiplayer (although you do need a Windows LIVE account, which is just as annoying (if not moreso). It'd make sense that singleplayer wouldn't need it either (but keep in mind that if you plan on playing multiplayer you might as well jump through the LIVE hurdles so your multiplayer account also has your singleplayer game information).
You don't need to create a profile in rockstar social. Games for windows live requires one, but it was fairly painless.

Just remember that GFW savegames are tied to gamertags. I had this problem with the default Player1 login and my own gamertag, which I had both used for EfLC by mistake.

I'm not sure I understand your warning.

If you log onto your one gamertag in GFW and then start a new game, you're going to have to keep on logging onto that GFW account to continue that game. The saved games are not shared across accounts.
Patching to the latest version at least removes the standalone (what a bad idea) rsc client and integrates it into the game so you login on startup. It's a useless user / pass so I just have it set to save it. It's an extra click now, not really bothersome as it was.

This is at least the case with the version that you get through steam.

if from a disk patch to the latest version, RSC has an option to play offline if you just want single player
That's good to know.
From my understanding, the social club is only for online play. I've never used that though, I just click play offline when it comes up.
