Nintendo Sept. 29 Conference Thread: 3DS in Feb./March 2011, Gameboy VC, and more!

edited October 2010 in Games and Technology
The conference is over! Lots of new 3DS info.

It launches in Japan on Feb 26, 2011 for ¥25,000 ($300). Two colors, Aqua Blue and Cosmos Black. It will be released in the west in March 2011, with no pricing announced yet. $250 seems likely based on past precedence.

EYE is Camera Control, A is ACTION (Roll, Open Door, later SHEATHE when he has his sword out). Colored tabs say map (center tab), but the left one's for equip and the right one for items. It's kind of similar to the original's menus, pressing L/R to change them. Cleaned up HUD, interface for inventory is strictly on bottom screen, looks like a hybrid of stylus and face button input.

In addition, Resident Evil: Mercenaries has been announced, along with Megaman Legends 3.

3DS features trailer, including tag mode and augmented reality:

The 3DS has its own Virtual Console for Gameboy and Gameboy Color games.

vcdemo.jpg

Hardware fact sheet reveals that the 3DS supports software transfer from one system to another a limited number of times.

An internet browser is confirmed, as is the ability to take a picture of someone and automatically turn it into a Mii.

The 3DS can multitask; for example, while playing a game you can visit the home menu, check something on the internet, and go back into the game where you left off.

A 2 gig SD card is included in the box, as well as a set of cards to use with augmented reality software. Its stylus is telescopic.

Hands on with the final version of the 3DS, including augmented reality and Mii generation:

UK retailer GAME has said it expects the Nintendo 3DS to launch in Europe next year.

Speaking in an investor call this morning, the firm backed up recent reports that suggested the new handheld will launch this side of the Atlantic in Spring 2010.

Hopefully unsubstantiated and it'll come out sooner, but this is how things appear to be shaping up.

Not meant to be a reply to you Leitner, just a new report that popped up.

I recall towards the end of E3 or possibly after, nintendo was hinting there was a feature or two in the 3DS that they had not revealed. Did we ever find out what that was all about, or is that going to drop tomorrow as well? Or were they just alluding to more in-depth information about tag mode and the like?

I think IGN has got it right with the predictions here. I think we'll get target release dates for regions outside of Japan though, but just the quarter in which they'll launch.

I'm 100 % certain that OoT 3D will be a launch title, like Mario 64DS was when the DS launched. And it will be awesome!!

That said I fear us Euroes will have to wait until february/march for the console to be released :(

EDIT: Fuck! Why does the conference have to take place at 5.30 in the morning?!?!?
Question is, am I nerd enough to wake up 2 hours earlier to watch a conference about a goddamn launch date?
    Yes, Yes I am

Worldwide release information is important for the Japanese investors in Nintendo though, so I don't think they'll completely ignore outside of Japan.

Same here--I can cross my eyes, I just can't see crap, much less something that looks like it has depth. But, on the bright side, I've heard that the 3D option will be...well, optional...on certain games. Which I have a feeling I will be relying on a lot if I get a 3DS.

The eye-crossing method doesn't work too well anyway. Even if you do it properly, you have a strange triple image and the depth is harder to understand because you don't have anything as a reference point-- you're focusing (converging) at a distance where the only thing that will look correct is the 3D picture.

I'm fairly sure that they have confirmed that they are making no less than 6 layton games for the original DS, so it would be a while before we got a 3DS version.

They moved production to 3DS from the 5th game onwards.

The 4th game is currently stuck in localization limbo though, as publication of Level 5's stuff in the west is shifting from Nintendo/other publishers to Level 5 self-publishing.

When Wired tried an English demo of the 4th game, the localization was terrible. I'm praying Level 5 can somehow bring it up to par.

Anyway, while I'm excited for the system I'm bracing myself for disappointment for the launch titles. The DS got off to a fairly shaky start, after all.
