So I am currently in community college and finishing up my GE's so that I can transfer to a four-year university. I only have a couple more semesters to go after this one and I figure it's probably the time to start pondering what I want to major in/do with the rest of my life.

One of the things I have been playing around with in my head is some sort of medical profession, specifically a physician's assistant or nurse practitioner. Originally I was considering general physician or doctor or whatever you want to call it, but upon consideration I have decided against that, as I would like to start a family when I am still young-ish (mid to late twenties) and the time it would take for me to become a full-fledged doctor would kind of kill that dream. But from what I understand, becoming a PA or NP takes a lot less time (and leaves you with a lot less debt), while keeping the aspect of being able to help people out, which is what draws me to the job.

So my question is, does anybody know/have any experience with either becoming a PA or NP? How long does it take? What kind of schooling do you have to go through? And so on and so forth.

    My wife's an NP.

That took a good bit of time.

Also, depending on where you're living, there are fuckall NP jobs right now.

Hrm, okay. Also for reference I live in California (lawl no jobs at all), but I'm probably not gonna be out of school for at least like, another 4 years if I decide to go with one of these paths so hopefully there will be more jobs by then =/ That's another appealing thing about PA, from what I've read they're creating more jobs within the next few years but this was learned from a few minutes of Google browsing and hearsay from my uncle so I am not putting a ton of stock into that.
