Xbox 360 games for someone returning to console????
1 19" Hannspree 1400x900 DVI LCD Monitor /w built in speakers
1 Original 20gb Xbox 360
1 Custom Build Desktop
1 Netgear Wireless Router
1 Pair of Steelseries Siberia Neckband Headphones
Here is the info i need for the setup.
What cables do i need ( KVM switch??, Xbox 360 Monitor cable???, Xbox 360 wireless adapter???? ) in order to hook both my desktop, and 360, up to the same monitor ( to switch between them ).
I know the practical solution is 'get a tv', but honestly I dont feel like shelling out for a small HDTV when i already have a monitor, and a headset that is capable of hooking up to the 360 already.
Is there anyway to pull this off, and what would i need for it?
And how much would it cost?
Okay. Now that THAT is figured out. Im repurposing this thread.
I need Xbox 360 Game reccomendations.
I havent played Xbox 360 since 2007. And i have no clue what is good on it.
Make recommendations for me.
Please be detailed. Either describe the game, or give me links to information about the game. Just blurting out Halo Reach or Call of Duty with no information on the game is not helpful to me.
The game does not have to be new. Im perfectly willing to go with older games.
Interest List ( To be updated as thread progresses ):
Blazblue
Dead or Alive 4
Fable II
Crackdown 2
Red Dead Redemption
Bad Company 2
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Castle Crashers
Shadow Complex
Monday Night Combat
Microsoft makes a 1st party VGA adapter for the 360.
You could probably find it at most brick and mortar stores or just grab it off amazon.
The only problem is that sound is still regular stereo connectors (white and red) but you can pick up an adapter at radio shack for next to nothing so they can hook up to computer speakers (tell them you want a stereo to mini jack adapter).
Those probably will both be male (the poked out side) so you'll need a double female adapter.
They'll have it as well, and it'll be cheap.

Ha! Sound is no problem. My headphones came with an adaptor for both the headset portion of the 360 controller, and the stereo output.
I wouldn't get a connector if you're buying the official VGA cables for the 360. Mine came with a stereo(female) > mini(male) adapter in the case, so you should be good if they haven't changed it.
Glad to be of service.
The cables for the speakers combined probably won't be any more then 10 bucks though, it's worth having them if you ever think you'll be watching a movie or playing something multiplayer.
Edit: Nice, didn't know MS was including those now. Something new, or perhaps I'm remembering buying those materials for something else?
Okay. A trip to a couple of stores has procured me a working xbox 360 setup.
Now i am repurposing this thread for game reccomendations ( no use creating two threads ).
Please list recommendations for me. I havent played 360 since 2007, and even then there were games i missed back then.
Please no blurting out titles. Tell me about the games. Tell me why they are good. Yelling out Halo or Call of duty without describing to me why the games are good, or linking me to any description of the game will get your recommendation ignored. It isnt helpful to me if i dont know why a game might be good, or what the game is like or about.
Additional information.
My taste is across the board. There is no genre or style of game you can reccomend that i wont take a look at or try. Everything from bleak military war games to JRPGs to puzzle games to anything.
First off, are you a PC gamer? Do we need to be blurting out titles like Modern Warfare 2 and Mass Effect 2 that are also games for the PC, or do you want Xbox 360 games only?

Wow. This is like. The best news.
WOO! Halo: Reach, HERE I COME!
Be warned with Halo:Reach. Apparently it has a habit of causing older Xbox's to crash. It happened to mine right as I was approaching the end. The Xbox still works fine, but I can't play Halo Reach for shit anymore. And according to the interwebs this is far from an isolated incident.

Crackdown/Crackdown 2, and the accompanying DLC - Massive open environment to wreak havok and destroy at your leasure. Also, there might be a story in there somewhere. But really, run around and do whatever you want. Also, you're superhuman, and can jump super high, and hit really freaking hard.
Lots of collecting to do too.
Mass Effect/Mass Effect 2 - kind of the opposite of Crackdown. You feel like you have this massive open environment, anyway. But really strong story, and awesome gameplay. I, (though I seem to be in the minority on this count) preferred the first to the second, but the story is solid, and continues all the way through.
Fable 2 - Really, the only game that can satisfy my chaotic evil nature. Standard fantasy setting with a story that doesn't really disappoint - but you can go for so long in between story elements, its not really what holds the game together. There's a good an evil scale, but not anything that is overtly obvious until you go most of the way one way or the other. Do whatever you want. Villager wants help? help her... or, kill her and buy her house at a severely reduced rate, and rent it out. Or do both, its really up to you.
Bad Company/Bad Company 2 - both are essentially the same. I suggest the first one because the story element in the single player is far superior in the first one, but the multilayer in the second one is phenomenal. It is the single best FPS multilayer game I have yet encountered is in BC2. The maps are big enough to begin with, but in certain modes, they expand to become these massive fighting environments, which force you to account for bullet travel time and drop if you're sniping. Its the polar opposite of the arcade style fps you'd get with call of duty or halo, and IMO, 1000x better.
There's also any number of XBL arcade games that are worth browsing through. They're short, and cheap, but offer a unique, fun experience. A lot of them only cost 80 msp, and are worth about that much. I usually just get the free demo honestly.
I want to throw out a strong recommendation for Red Dead Redemption. Good story, solid mechanics, and absolutely beautiful. Plus if you only have a little bit of time to play, you can throw in the disk and do a bounty-hunting side quest in the space of ten minutes before you go do something else -- I like that you can easily lose an evening playing the game, but it's also easy to just dick around for a couple of minutes if you're just killing a little time.
My favorite war game Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway. It's an outstanding portrayal of small-unit tactical combat -- using suppressive fire to support a flanking movement to finish off an enemy fire team is the order of the day. I wish my friends playing Halo could think this tactically.
If you're interested in Dead or Alive, consider also Batman: Arkham Asylum. Fantastic fighting in that game. Also beautiful, terrific production values for the art and particularly the voice acting.
Im going to throw another recommendation for Batman: Arkham Asylum. That game has everything. Metroidvania style exploration and item collection, upgrades, BATMAN, surprisingly deep and intuitive fighting system, BATMAN, great voice acting, Harley Quinn in a skirt, and oh yeah, BATMAN.

I'm seconding Mass Effect 1/2 - Just great story. The voice acting is spectacular as well. More than an interactive movie. ME2 really improves overall gameplay but many of the skills are removed/condensed (you'll get opinions across the spectrum saying if this was good or bad). I recommend the DLC for ME2 (Cerberus network, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, Kasumi).
Red Dead Redemption - Do you like open world? Do you like cowboys and six guns? Get this excellent game that allows incredible travel by horseback, skinning, hunting. Be an outlaw pursued by marshalls or
be the bounty hunter bringing the outlaw in for a reward.
Some of the Xbox live arcade games are great:
Castle Crashers: 1-4 player (on same console even!) side scrolling beat-em up like Double Dragon PLUS leveling up!
Shadow Complex: Really cool near future game similar to Metroid 1 and 2. Try the demo!
If so I wouldn't use the vga on your monitor cause in my experience (many others too) have noticed that the 360 looks not so great through vga.
You can get a good quality dvi to hdmi cable online for like $10, and connect to your PC with vga.
Edit: I should also note that this is also a cheaper solution than shelling out a ridiculous amount of money on Microsoft's overpriced accessories.

I had a lot of fun with the Ghost Busters game. The story was fun (all the original cast members as VAs helped a lot, especially Akroyd and Murray), and the controls weren't too bad. I don't know how much of a multiplayer there is online anymore, but since I found a copy for $15 used, I definitely got my money's worth.

A lot of people don't change the resolution or set the "enhanced" mode which should fix anything.
We have the option and I use the VGA because I hate the (extremely) tiny HDMI lag.
Honestly I guarantee you won't be able to tell the difference. It's the same resolution.
Not sure he'd be able to get sound with this set up either.
Though I know little about the crazy little revisions of DVI.

RCA to 3.5 mm adapter. With a Female to Female 3.5 mm coupler. Allows me to use the adapter for my headset so i get both the sound from the 360, and use the mic with the controller. Just set the voice to come through speakers, and voila.
Another note. i read a lot of about people bitching about washed out color etc with VGA.
As said above, if you actually change the resolution to the proper resolution, and correct the other settings of the system, it looks fine.
Its funny cause the majority of bitching on amazon is people who dont know what the fuck they are doing.

As far as input lag. I can't say I noticed anything there, but it was a while ago. What monitor did you use? I had a 24" Acer back before my HDTV days and don't remember any difference in input lag between using VGA or a DVI/HDMI cable.
You have a point about the cable issue. I forgot the speaker thing, but that can be easily rectified by getting a pair of $50 logitech speakers. They come with the game adapter and are going to be way better than any built-in monitor speakers out there.
I know it's it a bit more, but maybe its just me but I would rather spend $60 on a DVI-HDMI cable + speakers then spend $40 on an overpriced vga cable :P
Ok I missed the no HDMI part that sucks. Nevermind then...

Dead Space is one of the best horror games I've ever played. You're an engineer who's sent off with some basic engineering tools to check out what happened to a space ship that sent out a distress signal. Things go bad very quickly, and you're very unprepared. It's like the tension and atmosphere of Resident Evil or Silent Hill mixed with the satisfying combat and dangerous enemies of Resident Evil 4 and put it IN SPACE.

Straight off my Newegg wishlist when i purchased it.
Xbox can use the VGA and the computer can use the DVI.
We have a 360/PS3/PC hooked up to a monitor now all using different connections.
Simple as that.
Its really that simple?
Wow. Terrific.
So um. That said. What cables do i need to hook this 360 to it?
