Hey everyone, I've been lurking in the shadows of AC for a while now, and thought it was time to go ahead and post my art.

I used to treat the title 'artist' as some kind of strange and weird thing, that I didn't really associate myself with, but over the past few months (Despite me dedicating myself to drawing for the past several years) I've been getting used to the idea that I consider myself an illustrator. I think the sooner I accept and get comfortable with that idea, I'll be able to grow much more as an artist (And I definitely feel that I've got a lot of growing and learning to do).

Anyways, I've been thinking a lot lately about what it means to be an artist, yadda yadda, here are some actual drawings:

WIP I've put on the backburner, but hopeful for:

I work mostly with pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, but I've had an increasing interest in paint for the past few weeks. I'm considering trying out acrylics, but just need to get some money to get started.

Anyways, pretty big post, I hope you enjoy checking out my art. I really dig feedback, and critique. I encourage you to lend me any advice, or comment on anything I've posted. I don't have a lot of artist's in my circle of friends, so having my work critiqued by a non objective viewer is rare for me.

Thanks, I hope to post here more often, and always love seeing all the incredible work that gets shared here.

    Some more recent sketches.

I used to really like working with ballpoint pen, but stopped for some reason. I've been playin' around with it here and there though.

You seem to be on the right track, but you need to keep working on how you construct your drawings. You should try building things out of basic shapes a bit more, as well as focusing on proportions a bit. Some of your sketches suffer from flatness, you need to constantly keep in mind that the things you draw are three-dimensional objects, and you lose track of that a few times, but it's nothing some practice won't fix if you keep this in mind.

I would suggest grabbing Bridgman's book and doing studies:

Your structure is your weak point right now.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into it.

Can you define 'structure'? like composition? or the overall point of a drawing? I feel like I should know what you mean, but if you could elaborate a bit more, I'd appreciate it.

Structure as in the construction of the drawings themselves. Think of your drawings like beanbags - right now they are just outlines filled with this soft substance called rendering. Its not much to go on and they sag this way and that. There is no real structure and certainly no good metaphor going on here. ANYWAY...

This is Loomis - hes another great figure guy to study! Look at this structure. This is how to improve your work - rendering on top of a concrete structure.

lol I know what it feels like to get half way into a metaphor before getting confused and not really understanding where I was going with it too, but I what your saying. Thanks for the critique, I'll take it to heart and post more as it comes.

Playin around with some grey markers. I like them enough, but values are kinda tricky with them (as opposed to graphite). Just need practice I suppose.

Heres a pencil drawing I put a fair bit of effort into. For my art class last semester, we had to scan our hands and crop it interestingly. Then a grid and some graphite later, I got this.

Your stylized stuff is great, but a lot of your figure studies show a lot of problems with proportion. For example almost all your full figure sketches seem like they have long torsos and horrifically stumpy legs. It also looks like your spending a lot of time finely rendering things, while neglecting to plan ahead enough to leave room on the bottom of the page for legs. Spend more time getting the proportions right, before getting into shading and shadows.

The good thing is you clearly display great artistic talent, and when you fine tune your anatomical skills, its going to blast your stylized stuff to even greater heights.

Thanks man, words like that really get me stoked for the future. It's really encouraging.

And I totally know what you mean about my current grasp on anatomy/proportions, which though I've grown a lot thru this figure drawing class, are still early in development. I have a lot to learn. I am constantly erasing and redrawing legs, because I'm always drawing them off the bottom of the page. It's something I am really working on. I tend to not really focus on anatomy in my sketches, which I intend on changing.

I also wanna get into painting too, I have very little experience with paints, but I feel like trying out some acrylics. Just by looking at painters like Greg Simkins andJames Roper I get really excited about where painting can take me creatively. But like I said, I have almost no experience with them, so once I embark on that voyage, I'll surely post often and look for critique.

Thanks again for the words of encouragement and critique, more drawings to come soon.

I'm back. I don't post as often as I would like, but I'm back. Whats up?

alright so I have been wanting to get into some acrylics for a while now, and finally have picked up a cheap set of paints, and some cheap nylon brushes. I'm pretty stoked on them right now, and heres what I've come up with so far. Criticism is really welcomed, any tips on painting would be fantastic, I've never taken a class or anything on painting, so I'm kinda stumbling thru the dark here. I'm really enjoying it so far though.
