Sound problem (now taken to a whole new level)
HacksawJ. Duggan Esq.Wrestler at LawRegistered Userregular
So I bought some new headphones few days ago after my old ones up and crumbled into dust (read: the duct tape that bound it all together finally disintegrated, taking with it a healthy amount of vital sound-transmitting wires). I replaced them with these things, and after only a day of use they've stopped working completely. I tried everything I could think of to remedy the situation (uninstall and reinstall drivers and firmware), but alas, 'twas to no avail.
Help me out here, people. Anyone got any ideas as to what I can do to maybe fix this, aside from ordering new ones?

Make sure the USB device is set to your default audio output in the sound control panel for windows xp/vista/7. Make sure any software you run USES the default device and/or USB as the primary audio.
It's probably reverted to using the soundcard if theyve been unplugged or fuggled with.

I set it as the Windows default for sound, but it still doesn't seem to be producing anything. I'm wondering if it's a firmware problem, or perhaps even an error with the hardware itself.

So it's making sound now, only it's not the kind I want it to make. If I turn the volume up to the max and do a software sound test, it makes a kind of static-y sputtering noise, but nothing else.

So I went and got my old headphones and plugged them in, and now it seems the Creative headphones did so much damage they actually fucked my computer's ability to output sound. I am now, officially, completely lost.
The analog output of a soundcard, even if you somehow shorted it and managed to damage it, should have no bearing on another soundcard's (your headphone's USB) ability to produce sound, so don't worry about that. At worst, you'd have to reinstall Windows, but as said above, check both headsets (ooold and new) before doing anything else.

I re-installed my old headphones (non-USB) and got them working, so I guess my computer can still produce sound. I'm just going to return the new ones to Amazon and get a refund. I don't really have access to another computer to try them out on, so I think I'll just save myself the headache.
Though I think it might be worth noting that I only got the old 'phones to work after I switched their audio setting over to Front L/R Speakers from Headphones under Windows Sound. I did have to do that, before.
