Work is sending me to New York next month. They're paying for my air fare and hotel accommodations. I want my wife to go with me, however, work will only comp my ticket.
Work should book my flight today. What's the best way for me to buy a ticket for the same flight and return as my ticket?

If work is booking it for you, just ask them for the receipt or itinerary, if they dont give it to you already. You just have to look at the flight numbers and airline(s) they booked you on, and you can just look it up from there - hopefully they'll still have seats available on the flights.
Yeah, and when you check in, obviously you are checking in together on the same flight, just ask for seats next to each other. Some airlines allow you to check in online early, and choose your seats, so do that, and choose to sit next to each other (if you want to!!)
Do I need to call the airline directly or something or are there booking website that will let me pick flights specifically?
You could try searching the various travel websites for that specific flight, but the easiest way would be to just call the airline, tell them the flight you're on and that you'd like to purchase a ticket for your wife on the same flight.
Can you just have your place of employment dock you for the amount of a second ticket? That would guarantee same flight/time/etc.
Also, you *can* call the airline directly but they're more apt to make you pay through the nose. Try kayak.com for flight prices and such. That's how I usually book flights.

You can also use the airline's website and search for flights around the same time as yours, from there you can probably find the one that you want.
