you may remember that back in October of last year, a few of us forumers got riled up over a particular vote, and decided to make a video about it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd8gVRMio_E
This video garnered tens of thousands of views, climbed to the front page of Digg and reddit, and is currently in the research files of at least one house candidate running for office, who plans to use it in some fashion this election cycle (he/she is running against one of the thirty).
So, I feel like with Democratic apathy abound, maybe a smart move might be to show people that voting against the tea party might be a good idea and a good reason to go to the polls.
The concept is as follows:
Right now the Tea Party is running on two messages: Personal Liberties and "taxed enough already." The latter message is tied into a strongly contested belief that the government is too large, that we are deficit spending out of control, that we are bankrupting the american people with bad fiscal policy. What's amazing is that almost every one of their talking points regarding tax policy for middle america and below was fulfilled under Clinton's Administration in the 90s. I have rather conclusive facts from non-partisan entities that show that the deficit was down, that the number of government jobs was at its lowest, that our GDP was healthy, and that the unemployment rate was at the lowest it had been since the 60s. All of this was accomplished BEFORE the contract with America came in with the moral majority, then buried our government in years of pointless conversations about infidelity.
The gist of the video would be that fiscally, what the overwhelming number of tea partiers SAY they want is better served by a democratic executive and legislative branch, which means that they really AREN'T running on those issues. This can be covered in 20-30 seconds of clips of tea party faces and candidates (palin, o'donnell, armey, etc) asking for the fiscal things listed above, with on screen text showing how it was fulfilled by democrats in the 90s, and destroyed by republicans during the bush administration.
The last half of the video will be a "what are they really running on?" montage, with quick soundbytes where they are denying the right to worship, the right to an abortion in cases of rape or incest, the right to marry, etc... to dovetail into the first point, which is "personal liberties," something they support only if you are like them.
I may be trying to cram too much into this. This may be better as two videos... but I cannot help but think that we did it once, can do it again, and it could be something glorious that if played right can percolate up to the networks / cable even. At the least, we can game digg and reddit and see how far that takes us.
GAME PLAN
What we need right now more than anything else is a collection of tea party speeches and soundbytes. Things from youtube or other news websites are a-ok... but I don't want to have to read their words aloud; I want them to be the ones saying these things. Preferably the big names and faces of the party. I don't mind slicing these things together; I am sorta handy at Final Cut. But some help shaping the message, picking a good order to these things, and generally doing the "design by committee" thing we did last time is what I am looking for.
one final note:
THIS IS NOT ENDORSED OR SPONSORED IN ANY WAY BY PENNY ARCADE WHATSOEVER. THIS IS JUST A BUNCH OF LIKE MINDED FORUMERS EXPRESSING OUR FEELINGS ON THE CURRENT POLITICAL SITUATION.
I look forward to seeing where this one goes.
