My friend and I managed to get two computers hooked up once, and we did a lan... but I've never tried to get online with that game... not that I can remeber at least... sorry, If I was back home, I'd look it up for you, but I'm very limited with what I can do over here in the middle east.
My friends and I used to play lan games all the time, but it usually came down to see who could turtle the longest. I don't think we ever had an AoE2 game that lasted less than 3 hours.
I've been playing AoE2 for a little bit now since I played the first one so much. A friend and I would go online and do a lot of co-op together. We had a blast doing that, so I figured the second one would be fun too. So far it is and I'm hoping that he'll upgrade his computer so he can play it (yeah, it's that old).
You guys all made my night. Makes me proud to know the game still has fans. I'm thinking about getting Age of Empires 3, but I won't be able to until May when I return to the states.
As far as walls go I make the sweetest forts EVER! It takes way to long to get through them all. It's so sweet.

Whenever my friend and I would play AoE I'd build an army (usually chariot archers) and do all the normal stuff while he'd just reach his unit cap with peons. Then he'd follow behind my army with his army of peons and build a huge line of awesome towers that would somehow crush the opposition. It was great. Even if we died, he'd have a bunch of towers inside their base and stuff. Good times, good times.
I like Rise of Rome more. AoE2 is just castle rushing. And they're all rock-paper-cissors. You just wait for your opponent to pick a civ, and then you pick one that counters it.
Also, I didn't like AoE3.
My favorite AoE2 moment: It was an islands game, and I double-walled off my entire island as well as putting in a line of towers. Nobody could get onto my island.
When I'm stuck playing it by myself (I'm the only one that brought it out of all the other people in my flight.) I like to play regicide. I'll get on the biggest map and have like... four or five other armies on there. Then I'll make allies with as many of them as I can. Then I'll build my castle smashing equipment, and a couple knights or something quick on a horse. Your allies will totally not do anything when you set your shit up around their castle. Then you get your knights ready, and switch that shit to enemy and bust that shit up. The king will make a run for the town center, and either you can get him with your knights, or bust that shit up too. If you fuck things up too bad you usually have more then enough time to switch your stance back with that king, and you're good. Set up and repeat that shit. Once you kill their king, all of the units freeze, and they're all yours' for the taking. Plus, you can steal all their villagers and just keep them working on whatever. Great steal! After you do this enough time, you just build walls around the whole map and slowly take over EVERYTHING. It's awesome.
The one thing that bothered me about this game was that the Turks and the Persians were grossly overpowered compared to the other races. That aside it's tied with RoR as my favorite RTS.
My games always amounted to "Stop attacking me! I need to put this gate next to this other gate and then set up some more walls and maximize the efficiency of my fishermen....HEY!"

Heh. Ever played a villager war game? Or a resource wipeout? Thoes take a lot longer then they sound like, but watching all the industry is awesome.

I might have to reinstall.
I've never had any problems with military management and attacking in other games, I was great at it in Zero Hour. None of that "No rush 15 min olol" bullshit, just skill. But something about AoE2...I want to build an efficient fucking fortress, guys.

What I normally did was build a very small village and build a wall around that, then build outside of the walls and add another wall, ect.

Lan and direct IP connections haven't worked.
I'm fully patched and using the expansion, as is the dude I'm trying to play.

I loved building walls so much. The game allows you to build real forts.

Regicide was my preferred cup o' tea.

But most of my experience was against NPCs
