Landholdt was the niece of his friend, the Swiss physiognomist Johann Kaspar Lavater. Fuseli wrote of his fantasies to Lavater in 1779:

So the glorious Chinese Empire of North America has traveled to the stars. So I have won a science and military victory in Civ 5. I need to win a cultural and diplomatic victory now. Figure Alexander for the diplomatic and Ghandi for the cultural.
