4gb versus 6gb

M-VickersM-Vickers Registered User regular
I've recently added 2gb of ram, taking me from 2 to 4 gb. Mostly because civ 5 is something of a hog.

It's made a huge difference, and I'm now debating adding another 2gb.

I'm using windows 7, and I know that uses about 1.5gb for itself, hence the big improvement when I added the 2bg, but I'm unsure whether I'd benefit from the jump to 6gb.

I only use my pc for gaming, and watching tv. My graphics card is a 512mb Radeon 4850.

Opinions ?

Assuming you're running the 64 bit version, yes, more memory is better. Especially if you do anything hardware intensive, or like having a large number of things running at once.

If you're using DDR3 memory, that can go 3 channel if the number of ram slots occupied is divisible by 3. Which means triple RAM speed!

I think you should sell some internal organs, and go and buy 6x4GB sticks of RAM.

Ah, I knew I forgot something...

    Yes, I'm using win 7 64bit, and it's ddr3 (albeit a 'value' brand)...

The company I got it from, Aria (in the UK) only does up to 2gb sticks, else I'd have got 4 to start with - I was on a tight budget and skimped on the RAM to keep costs down.

You've talked me into it. :-). Roll on payday...

This isn't actually true, as far as it goes. The only processor line that currently has a triple-channel memory controller is Intel's Socket 1366 i7 line. So if you run any other processor, and have, say, 3/4 slots filled (The only motherboard's with more than 4 are either 1366 boards or a few weird 1156 boards), you won't get triple channel speeds.

Unless Civ5 runs in native 64-bit mode, and you are running 64-bit Windows, adding more RAM will not help it. 32-bit applications are generally limited to a maximum usage of 2GB of RAM. There are some exceptions to this, but it's like 99.9% certain that a video game is not one of them.
