Does anyone know of an mp3 player that also has an FM and an AM/MW radio built in? I had a walkman 12 years ago that had both radio bands, surely someone has done this on an mp3 player.
I don't think so, and that makes me a sad panda, especially as I work in radio. I'm getting a Zune fairly soon because of the FM tuner, but if I saw a quality mp3 player with both bands, it'd be a definite front runner as my pick.
Seriously, I know noone who has had anything but trouble with those.
They're fragile, 2 or 3 of my friends have had problems with the audio socket having a contact not working properly.
they scratch the instant you touch them, and are just generally fairly terrible pieces of kit unless you take incredible care with them.
Interface is nice though. And apple's flash players are wonderful.
Get something els though, if you want large storage.
I'd disagree. I've admittedly had mine only for a short while, but it's been rock solid. Of course, I don't go jogging with the thing, so it could just be that the product is under lower amounts of stress than yours. Or just that newer ones can take the punishment.
- I much prefer the iTunes store over the alternatives. I'd rather buy than rent, because I don't use it very often (maybe twice a year to bail myself out when I need to hear a classical piece in a hurry for a class or something, or if I want to hear something that I don't really care about DRM). Plus renting just sits bad with me, even if it's supposedly cheaper. Proprietary is not really an issue for me, since I find myself constantly forced to use iTunes no matter what kind of computer I'm on because no other software comes close to its organizational capabilities. (Mac version is a lot better though.)
- As I said, I prefer iTunes. PC version is kinda bloated and slow and not tremendously great, but I can't live without its organizational capabilities. Every other competitor I've tried hasn't come close. (Feature-wise maybe, useability no.)
- I'm using Macs and PC's as my primary machines all the time, off and on. A player that doesn't work with one platform is unacceptable.
- Fantastic UI. (The Zune's is good too I hear, but this is just a reason not to get anything besides those two.)
- I would almost pay money to not have radio.
- Hopeless Apple fanboy; no matter how arrogant they get they still make me want their stuff somehow.
That's basically it. I only personally own one of the old-type 1 GB iPod shuffles, and I have relatively few complaints. The iTunes interface is fantastic, and the battery life is epic. It plays music.

Re: non-Nano iPods, if you're worried about scratches, check out these things: www.bestskinsever.com. You can barely tell they're on (i've had people fool around with my ipod and not notice a thing - then they ask me why i don't have a case for it), they fit like a glove, are much cheaper than their shieldzone.com counterparts, and stop everything short of gunfire from scratching your device.
My 20GB iPod is 6 years old, and apart from needing its second battery replacement (only getting about 3-4 hours), it's still going strong. I got mine used, so it was already a bit marked up, so it hasn't got a case or a skin, but if I ever get a new one I'll stick a BSE on it. I have those on my DSL and my PSP, they're fantastic.
So I forgot something in my apartment before class, and decided to get my nano 2nd gen out of my pocket, before I even opened the door. It was raining, and I slipped on the steps. Motherfucker went flying out of my hand, and fell three stories to the concrete below.
The corner on the top left is scratched, but everything else is still in pristine condition.
Creative labs Zen players are my preference, they drag and drop and are built like tanks. I went snowboarding with one and it survived all my falls very well without a single scratch(thank you trillian). My hip to which I had it strapped on the other hand, was bruised for weeks. Also I send many ipods out for service, have yet to get a zune in, and only ONE zen ever.
I have an Archos Gmini 204CC. Given, it's a lot more tech than you want, but I've found it useful even though I've treated it pretty badly - it's all scratched up and one of the metal sides is falling off. But it still works, and I was able to install a NES emu on it (I had to downgrade the firmware).
I'll probably also be in the market for a new MP3 player once get money in like... a year or something. 18.7 gigs isn't enough for me! But the Gmini does have drag and drop USB features.

I ordered this thanks to you. Looks better than my latex slip that essentially hides the sleek sexiness of my black iPod.

As somebody already pointed out, http://www.bestskinsever.com takes care of scratches. For less than $10, any scratches or smudges can be wiped off with a tissue or cloth. As for being fragile? I have taken my 80gig 5.5g biking or jogging every day since I got it in October and have yet to have ANY issues with it. And get something else if you want large storage? Show me an 80gig player with comparable form factor, features, etc, that costs significantly less.

To be fair, you cant really get anything to match the 80GB, I will admit. I've heard confliscting sories about quality, and while I do know someon with a working Ipod from several years ago, it seems to be totally hit and miss whether they work well or not.

Bad news first...Even though I'm getting this, it makes me sad to know that it only accepts 1 gig SD cards or smaller. Hopefully a firmware update some day will change this.
Good news: FM and AM tuners, and furthermore, can record from radio straight to mp3 at any given moment, or can be set to do so on a schedule. Of course, it also functions as an MP3 player, or as a general media storage device. Even has built speakers AND a mic.

Me, I would go with an iPod for these reasons:

That's the beauty about pre-orders (at BBTS, anyway). You don't pay until it's in-stock.

Zunes in the wild: 1 million
Uh...
...quit it with the FUD.
There, but for the grace of god, go I.
Though admittedly I dig my Zune more - Zune Pass.
