x-men 90s cartoon was indeed quite awesome. I liked the two-part storyline called "One Man's Worth" where professor X is assassinated before he gets to do any of his work related to mutant/human relations.
As far as the arcade version, I remember beating it with 3 other friends, great time. I always remember magneto's "welcome to die!" (the title of the thread), and going "wait...what?"
Ah, the good old days when humanity acted like humanity instead of a slavering fiendish monster out for the blood of all mutants...
That was back when characters could die and it might actually mean something. At this point, which X-men haven't died and returned or are otherwise immortal?
This arcade game really did come out at the perfect time and use the perfect character designs, though. Used basically all the exact same stuff as the animated series and since the animated series had almost identical designs to the comics, pretty much everybody was recognizable. Not just a good game, but a great piece of marketing and advertising as well.
Aside from the silly music, that intro to the Japanese version is actually much cooler. But yeah, lots of explosions. Still, I like explosions--this is speaking to me.

The animation quality was better, but... it wasn't very representative of the actual cartoon. I mean, you'd think the Brood and giant anime mechs were all the X-Men fought.
And everybody seemed to be flying through purple colored hyperspace.

To be fair, the opening to the American version wasn't very representative of the show, either. IIRC, Beast was in prison for like three seasons, and they never had an epic battle against all of those villains at once.

Never played this, so I'm keeping an eye on this game.
I always thought that 90s TAS theme was amazing. In its own way, it left as much of a stamp on the franchise as Williams did for Superman and Elfman for Batman. Which was why it really sucked when Singer went for a completely different theme in the live action films.
I mean, people can still hum the TAS theme. I don't even remember the movie theme, to be honest.
Maybe we should turn this into a multipurpose thread with that really vaguely announced Silicon Knights X-game as well.
Also, I want to take the opportunity to say that the complete season/series DVD and Blu-Ray set for Wolverine and the X-Men comes out this week, and that show is the shit. It really modernized the season-long arc style storytelling of the 90s series.
Some people complain that Wolverine would never lead the X-Men, but
Jean Grey is missing, presumed dead, so Cyclops loses his shit. Professor X is displaced in time. There is really no one else tough enough to reassemble the team, so it's up to Logan with help/convincing from Beast to do it.

X-Men 2: Clone Wars for the Genesis was one of my favorites. You could do some crazy shit with Nightcrawler, plus playing as Magneto was pretty cool, even though he sucked for most things (except killing Apocalypse slowly and easily).
I never had more fun in an arcade than I did as a kid playing 6 player X-Men. Whenever my folks went down to Reno to gamble, they'd bring my brothers and I along and we'd hit the X-Men machine, gathering other kids as we marched toward it. We'd literally say "X-Men!" at kids as we passed, and those interested would join us... and we'd proceed to all rotate through as we beat the game over and over until our parents got bored. 6 player X-Men was a uniquely social arcade experience, like a proto-PAX in every cabinet.
At least, that's how I remember it. I guess it was... what, 20 years ago now? My memory may be a bit biased.
Even though it was technically inferior, the first X-Men game on Sega Genesis was pretty fun. At least, I remember it that way.
The best part is after the Mojo fight in level five. I remember just sitting there wondering why I hadn't gone on to the next stage. Then a countdown begins, alarms start going off, and the computer monitors in the background all say reset, but I'm still stuck there. At first, I tried waiting it out, but every time I tried that it always lead to a swift death. And you can't leave the area.
So, stuck at this point for at least a month, and unable to figure out what I was doing wrong, I got to that point again and decide to just turn the system off. Instead, I hit the rest button, though I don't know why. Subliminal maybe?
Ones and 0's all start flooding the screen (this was pre-matrix, you understand) and I find myself on the sixth, and final level. Granted, I never could beat that one, but just the sheer novelty of the solution to that puzzle amazes me even today.
Aye, I imagine that lotcheck requirements for most systems would forbid using reset as a button in the actual game. I know for a fact that that's the case with the Wii, at least... and I can only imagine that it would be true for other systems. You *could* technically make it do something other than reset, but their lotcheck review process would fail you for it.
Also, I don't think I ever would have completed that level. I'm glad that I didn't play the game, I'd have been extremely angry to find out that this was the solution.

After the success of TMNT Arcade (the original, not Reshelled), I figured it'd be only a matter of time before this popped up. Great place to announce it too, especially during the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 hype hurricane. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and this in the same year? It's a good time to be a beat-'em-up fan.
I still have the 5-part Phoenix Saga recorded from Fox Kids on VHS somewhere around here.
My neighbors as a child were just as obsessed with the show as I and my sister were and we were just fucking FREAKING OUT about the thing when all that shit started going down.
Yeah, Dazzler was more useful than Cyclops at least: her special had a larger blast radius, and her ground attack had more distance.
Another "when I was a kid" X-Men story... yeesh. So when I lived in Sacramento, there was a grand opening (or was it re-opening with new management? I can't remember for sure) for this theater that was basically a series of domes with stadium seating. Neat place, but what I remember most was that on their opening day they made their arcade games free: basically by exposing two wires from behind the coin box that you could press together to give yourself a coin.
Some jerk of a kid had given 700 lives to Cyclops and then left (some other kid was kneeling below him basically pressing the wires together over and over), and of course I was next in line when he split. I was stuck playing the worst character through the whole game. I wasn't going to complain of course because it was free, but Cyclops sucks... I'm pretty sure the kid did it on purpose, knowing that Cyclops sucks. He was an early griefer.

I remember the Brood level with Cyclops being really annoyingly difficult...but ultimately the level that really put your patience to the test was Asteroid M...that final area was a nightmare.
Yes it was. Fuck that shit. Also, the Brood level was easy enough once you got the hang of doing hadoukens in the air for Cyclops. There were some things I never figured out how to get though, the little X icon on Wolverine's level being the one I can think of off the top of my head.

Gambit and Psylocke were so fun to play. And yea, the queen Brood was easy with air hadukens...it was the stupid small critters that drove me crazy.
Sadly I only ever beat the final boss with Wolverine.
It took me forever to finally pull it off, but Wolverine ended up being the guy I finally downed Mags with.

Wait, pressing two wires together...aren't most arcade machines equipped with a "free play" mode via dip switches?

I distinctly remember there being wires hanging out from where the coin box was. Whether they were doing it wrong or what, I don't know. But I remember the other kid sitting down there pushing the wires together over and over.
Also, yes! Century Theaters! ... you weren't that kid, were you? Jerk! lol
Well if they had the coin mech open, you can just push the little wire/bar that the coin trips when it falls down. There are usually lots of electrical wires around that for the lights on the coin slots and stuff. That's probably what it was.
Ah, crazy Japanese animu openings; always so enthusiastic about what they're showing. Plus, some of the most gratuitous use of Engrish since: YOU WA SHOCK!!!
I think we can all agree that Capcom's Marvel offerings were all pretty superior to the majority of games released by other companies, especially in the arcades, but there were some pretty good ones here and there. Anybody play the Spider-Man beat-'em-up (I think it was made by Sega) featuring Black Cat, Namor and Hawkeye? Y'know, THIS one. Wasn't that bad, really.
Man, how bored does Spider-Man look in that video?
Not that I am saying the game is boring or anything. He just looks bored.
I think he's suffering from low back pain. Look at his posture when he walks.
Also, I always found it funny how casually the characters walks in these beat em up games. Its like... the streets are full of people trying to beat you up, and you're a super hero but you're on a casual stroll.

They just aren't immediately associated with the word "X-Men" in your mind
That's the problem with a lot of movie scores for me - they can be really memorable, but damned if I can remember which movie it was for
