I just started playing WoW with my girlfriend. With all the hacked accounts, I was wondering if it was worth it to pick the Authenticator? My girlfriend has an ipod touch should she get it for that or pick up the key chain? Thanks in advance.

May as well get it for the iPod Touch. I have it on my iPhone, it's nice. And free, so there's that.

Yes it's worth it. I had my WoW account hacked even though I hadn't played for like 1.5 yrs, but they got in during one of the 10 day free trial periods.

Now that I have it linked to my SC2 account, the peace of mind is worth the few $.

Yeah if you a device that can run it anyways, just get it, might very well save you from being locked out of your account for a few weeks at a later date. I got an authenticator for my blizzard account and I don't even play WoW or have a WoW account tied to it.

Its easy to use, cheap/free and might save you trouble later on, go for it.

Worth every penny. You aren't hack proof, but it'll definitely make it much less likely to happen.

I continue to not have one. No one is ever hackproof obviously, but if you're practicing good browser and password security habits you aren't very vulnerable really.

There's really not a rational reason not to get an authenticator at this point though (unless maybe you live in one of those countries where they still cost like 20 dollars), especially if you have one of the various consumer devices that can just run an authenticator application. I have heard that it's even possible to spoof the droid authenticator app so that it'll run on your desktop, but I don't know if this is actually true.

Absolutely worth it. I'm slightly upset that they don't include them with new copies of the game.

I hadn't played for over 1.5 years and tried to re-access and merge my account with Battle.net only to learn that someone had gained access to my account two weeks prior.

Of course, Blizzard thinks that this is my fault. I had to spend a considerable amount of time attempting to prove that I was actually the person who owned the account. This morning my account was finally reinstated.

If you don't want to get an authenticator (which I don't), you could always just change your password every few weeks.

    Absolutely worth it.

I hear that having it on an iphone or other such device is nice, but I like having my handy little gadget sitting beside the monitor, ready to go when I want to fire up SC2 (not much these days) and on standby for D3 (whenever that is).

Think of it as a condom for your account. It doesn't make you 100% impervious to bad/unwanted things happening, but it's a whole hell of a lot safer than doing without, and it's a small cost (or free) no matter how you cut it.

This is an account you might end up putting hundreds or thousands of hours into on various characters. Isn't that worth a couple of bucks (or space on a device) to help protect?

Definitely get it. My friends have been hacked repeatedly, I never have been. Guess who got an authenticator as soon as it was available.

Alright we got the authenticators. One more question. We just have the battle chest version of WoW. Since we are just starting out does it make sense to pick up the WotLK right away or can we hold off?

Hold off until you get to 70.

Pretty much. WotLK-exclusive content starts at level 55 (when the death knight class is unlocked), with the bulk of it being 68 and up.

Unless you want a Worgen or Goblin come Cataclysm, in which case you will need to go ahead and get WotLK first.

You could buy it at 58, as above, since it offers an option to effectively change class. DK's start at 55, with their own area that brings you to 58. They're a melee/tank class build around rotations and procs. Back when I played, they were quite powerful at lower levels, but also overrepresented. Otherwise, I can think of no content before level 68.

Note that the first expansion, Burning Crusade, covers level 58 to 68. (as well as two races, but if you want to play those you have to start from level 1). You have to buy that seperately. The third expansion is launching soon, which may lower the price of the first two if you haven't reached level 58 yet.
