Some shitty rural area outside of Vancouver. They wanted to upgrade power lines and the residents went all bananas about electro magnetism, and stood underneath the old lines with flourescent bulbs which lit up.

    Bunch of voodoo.

Pretty interesting article in the Globe today about the potential for a real currency war between the developing world and the developed world. Lots of angry statements during the last few G20 events that didn't get a lot of play at the time (that are now being scrutinized in light of America's decision to devalue their currency.)

Also interesting to see the Bank of Canada's rightly-rankled attitude towards America's unilateral decision to inflate away their massive debt load. It must be maddening for the central planners of the Canadian economy to know that even our best long-term planning for sustainable growth can be tossed aside on the whimsical governance of Washington.

It's not like this is new or something though.

I pay alot of attention to American politics in large part because we usually get dragged down with them whenever they start being stupid.

    Vas is dis? Revaluation?

A lot of people bought homes on or near a BC Hydro right-of-way through which high-tension transmission lines carry electricity to Vancouver Island. A couple years ago BC Hydro upgraded the towers and there was a great hue and cry and all the people living on the right-of-way went apeshit because of their property values. I guess some of them realized the whole "MY PROPERTY VALUES" line wouldn't garner much sympathy, given that they knowingly agreed to the right-of-way, so they started flapping their arms about how electromagnetic radiation from the lines would somehow ionize airborne particles and give everyone cancer. Or something. Anyway they collected a tidy buyout deal from Hydro and lived happily ever after. The end.

Wouldnt purposely electing atheists in fact be caring about their [lack of] religion?

Unless that was snark, in which case my only excuse is the time of day.

As long as the politician gets the job done, I don't give a shit what religion or lack thereof they believe in. None of that is relevant to his/her intelligence and competence.

Him being a Muslim is only interesting insofar as Calgary is, obviously, a predominantly conservative city that would typically be seen as adverse to the notion of letting a Muslim run the city. I doubt that will have any bearing on how well he runs things.

I know he isn't gay but I understand the tabloids/radio jocks unironically called him a "gay Muslim" after he turned up at the pride parade.

The fact that he is Muslim is significant because the right wing in this country (especially out west) can barely conceal its hatred for Muslims. They think Islam is a political ideology. I know people who literally think all Muslims should be exiled to Iran or whatever. The commenters on the National Post are having a fit.

Anyway, looking at Naheed's platform and website he seems like a really cool guy. I'm glad he beat out the tarsands party candidates. Grats, Calgary.

It's probably more to do with the large number of muslims living in Calgary. There are few exceptions to the rule that where there is money, you will find immigrant populations in large numbers. This is as true in Calgary as it is in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal.

He did connect with young voters just by the fact the he was constantly using social media to talk to people. He put his campaign ideas on youtube and if you had any questions about his platform you could even text them in. I sent in a question and got a quick reply and a text on election day asking if I needed directions or a lift to go vote.
