Xbox 360 Recommendations! (BWAH?)
Descendant XSkyrim is my god now.Outpost 31Registered Userregular
It's been a while since I've seen one of these threads, since pretty much everyone has a 360 and generally it's the PS3 that has the recommendation threads.
Well, yesterday I received my brand spankin' new 360 from my ISP because I'm a good customer who was willing to sign a two-year contract.
Now I need suggestions for games that I need to play.
I currently have a few XBLA games (Shadow Complex, MtG, Serious Sam, Rez) and Crackdown, as well as Halo 3 and ODST.
Please recommend some games that you've found to be excellent that preferably are not available on the PS3. If the game is not exclusive but better on the 360, I'm listening. Please also recommend XBLA games, as I'm a bit intimidated by the vastness of the marketplace.
Thanks!
Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!
Monday Night Combat for sure. It is a third person class based tower defense shooter. Watch some videos of it and you will get the gist of it.
Also, I can not reccomend Red Dead Redemption enough. I just got into this, and its insanely good. If you like westerns in the slightest this is like a living breathing western.
Dead Rising: Case Zero is $5 on Xbox Live Arcade. Buy that and if you like it, Dead Rising 1 and 2 might be good buys (though Dead Rising 1 has a LOT of annoying bits they ironed out in the sequel).
The new Lara Croft game on Xbox Live Arcade was pretty awesome, especially in co-op. A fun shooter/puzzler. The first DLC for it is going to be free on Xbox apparently, so that gives it a leg up vs the PS3 and PC versions I guess.
If you like shooters and don't mind cover gameplay, you could do worse than Gears of War. (You can skip the first game probably. Gears2 is excellent though.)

Splosion Man
That should get you started.
In all seriousness, aside from Splosion Man, Plants vs Zombies is fantastic (it's on XBLA but there's a disc version with other Popcap games, but I'm not sure if it's out yet in the US), as is Limbo, Chime and Geometry Wars 2.

'Splosion Man I played over at my brother-in-law's and it didn't do much for me.
And I suppose that I should mention that I'm not much for tower defense.

All of this for sure. I still say Lara Croft is the best title on XBLA, hands down. Another good XBLA title though is Bionic Commando: Rearmed.
Also great are Mass Effect 1 & 2 (if you haven't already picked that one up for another platform). ME1 has some issues but is still a pretty fun game and ME2 is so much better when you import a save from ME1 (it's still pretty good otherwise, but the importing adds a lot to the experience IMO).
I'm also going to throw Deadly Premonition out there as a great budget title. It has some serious gameplay problems and the graphics are last gen at best, but it more than makes up for that with absolutely hilarious and awesomely weird story and dialog. If you are unsure, watch a few episodes of the Giant Bomb Endurance Run (there are actually two runs in there - VJ and BR are seperate runs, otherwise they go sequentially by number). But I mean, it's like $20 :P
Bayonetta, because it's much better on 360 in terms of load times, framerate, textures, and color, and because it's an amazing action game along the lines of DMC3.
Red Dead Redemption is indeed fantastic. Its the one game pushing me into buying another console. I won't because I'm a cheapskate but you get my drift.
Dead Rising 1 and 2 - Highly addictive 72 hours in a sandbox.
Brutal Legend - The first full scale RTS on a console that doesn't suck. This is achieved by injecting it with balls-to-the-wall Heavy Metal Hack and Slash. Unlike PSN, the online community is healthy on LIVE. Today is it's anniversary. Tim Schafer is playing online tonight and I'm looking for him. And if you have a PC, the game is an indirect sequel to a little gem called Sacrifice.
Splosion Man - You got Splode in my Splosion.
Pac Man Championship - WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL TO COME OUT. IT WILL BE AWESOME.
Ikaruga - Now with 25% more Not Regret. Be Attitude For Gains.
Deathsmiles - Oh sweet Jesus, Deathsmiles. A cross section of everything I love about shumps. The smooth difficulty of Touhou, the length and production value of Gradius V, the replay value of every shump in existance, and the modern technology of replays and leaderboards. Pimps the Goth Lolita characters proudly, yet the actual characters are ironically more tasteful than Mushihimesama's big titted Reko.
Definitely get Nier, Ikaruga, and Braid. Obviously the Gears of War titles are a must (do play the first before the second). Oh, and Deadly Premonition is amazing. Not exactly the most fun game to play, but taken as a whole experience it is time well spent. If you want a story and character driven game, it's a much better choice than Mass Effect.
Have fun with your Xbox! Bayonetta, and Pacman Championship, are definitely good choices, too.

Lucas's Franklin Badge reflected the lightning back!
Limbo was probably one of the more enjoyable gaming experiences I've had in a while. Nice little puzzle platformer, great looking art, and a nice dark, yet delightful, vibe throughout the game.
I'm avoiding PS3 titles here. In light of the fact that you already have 3 and ODST, give a look at Halo Reach, especially if you've gotten comfortable with multiplayer in either. The Halo games have phenomenal multiplayer with such a diverse range of options that other console FPS can't even approach it by half.
Tales of Vesperia is a fun, albeit difficult (at least for me) JRPG with an interesting plot and characters more likeable than your average RPG period.
Mass Effect 2 is good enough to stand as a third-person shooter in its own right, but has a phenomenal story, great characters, and excellent visuals.
If you're into third person shooters in general, look at both Gears of War games. The second is basically the first, but with more, and better--more weapons, more action, more multiplayer, more gore, more ham.
Dead or Alive 4, an oldy (by now), but a goody, if you enjoy fighters. It's pretty much the only actual four-person 3D non-arena fighter and is enormous fun with three other people (Namco, why the fuck hasn't this happened yet in SCIV? I can switch characters in a magical poof, but you can't allow people to do it between controllers?)
Both Monkey Island games are outstanding HD releases on XBLA, but they might be on PSN also? Likewise, Lara Croft & The Cradle of Life might also be on PSN, but it is way more fun (and more bang for your buck) than it has any right to be.
Red Dead Redemption is indeed fantastic. Its the one game pushing me into buying another console. I won't because I'm a cheapskate but you get my drift.
It is by far my favorite game this generation. I am a fan of westerns though.

I picked up Nier used for $25 this evening. I figure that if I don't like it I can always trade it in towards Rock Band 3 at the end of the month.
Keep the recommendations coming, folks. I have a feeling that I'll be buying some more points soon...

Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!
I'm personally snagging Pac-Man Championship tonight, as I just tried the demo out and it is AWESOME. They're making a sequel, too? Even better! Best part, I never even really liked Pac-Man.
I'm also considering the Galaga eXtreme game or whatever it's called. That looks really cool, but doesn't appear to stick to the Galaga roots as much as the Pac-Man one, does. How about the Space Invaders one? I might check that out.
Also, Miner Dig Deep. It's a dollar, and it's fuckawesome. I don't know if I'll bother playing it again after beating it, but I got several hours of fun, and it's definitely worth a buck. You can find it on the Indie store.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is on there, as well.. Tons of fun as always. And if you've never played it, well then you're a fucker and you need to get it.
Both Scott Pilgrim, and Castle Crashers are fantastic beat em ups.
Sometimes I wonder why I even bother leaving the house to snag bargain bin titles.. The online store has plenty of gems in there...
Ahem... anyways: Assassin's Creed is only ten bucks, and awesome. Blue Dragon is rather charming, but a very easy JRPG (well, boss battles can be a pain early on, but they start getting much easier), get the downloadable content and crank up the difficulty. If you liked the Dynasty Warriors series, Warriors Orochi is the best I've played so far, and it's also only ten or fifteen bucks. I also have to put in my vote for Earth Defense Force.
I'm considering Fable 2. The first one was fun enough... but disappointing after all the hype. If Fable 2 is similar or better, I might be able to enjoy it more going in expecting Fable.
Mass effect is a must. Gears of War is also good if you like third person shooters with copius amounts of violence, don't bother with the first though, the second is basicaly the same just with better visuals, better gameplay and horde mode. I loved the first but your not missing out on anything if you don't get it.
So I know we are mentioning exclusives but how is Dragon Age? I really love Mass Effect and I think the setting of Dragon Age seems neat. Plus the edition with all the DLC is coming out soon.

Yeah, I actually had Dragon Age for the PS3 for a while.
And I didn't like Mass Effect. I traded it in for my New Vegas preorder. Does that make me a bad person?

So, yeah. If you just go buy older used games, I'd suggest:
Fable 2
Mass Effect
Left 4 Dead (1 or 2)
One of the Forzas
Try one of the Gears of War
Alan Wake
I checked and the other games I'd mention aren't 360 exclusives.
edit: If you like mass effect, you'll probably like DA. I felt they were similar enough that a comparison was warranted. I liked DA, though I could only stomach one playthrough. I did have sex with every character possible though.
If you need a 1st person Diablo-ish loot whore game, I'd recommend Borderlands. I think the GOY edition with all 4 DLCs is available now for $50.
Id second Borderlands. For a Shooter its got a lot going for it.
I didn't even like Borderlands and feel it's something everybody should experience.
Shit. I'm going to get this GOTY edition and try again until I like it.
Its one of those games, that if you get a group of friends together for... its an experience beyond playing a game. I mean even playing alone the game is immensely fun, but with friends? Its amazing. I have it on Steam and have been rocking it since november.

Let me ask you, have you only played it for the PC or have you played on 360 as well?
I played through it once on the 360 when it first came out on a rental. I'm thinking of grabbing the GOTY edition but teetering between the PC and 360 versions. The way I see it, I'd prefer the controls on the PC and I'd have more of an online community. But on the 360, there's the comfy, comfy couch. And the gigantic television.
*Due to topographical and logistic restraints, hooking my PC up to my television in front of the couch is not an option.

How far did you get? Because Splosion Man starts off easy but quickly becomes wonderful (in my opinon).

This game is soul-crushingly addictive. I thought I was going to simply a play a few games of it, then I realize it's 1AM.
Lots of great games there (and on the following pages) and most of them are only $1.
Steam ID : rwb36, Twitter : Werezompire,

I only refrained from mentioning it because a new one is coming out. And it has online multiplayer apparently.
Yeah but this one is out now and it's like $10.

Everyone should play Nier
everyone
every single fucking one of you
And I didn't like Mass Effect. I traded it in for my New Vegas preorder. Does that make me a bad person?
It makes you an incredibly bad person who deserves nothing more than a bullet through their head.
Not really though.
I reactivated my Gamefly account to play Nier
Fable 2
Mass Effect
Left 4 Dead (1 or 2)
One of the Forzas
Try one of the Gears of War
Alan Wake
